I went to Porfirio’s late last night for my birthday dinner after we missed our reservation at Sonora Prime due to a mishap with our Airbnb. It was next door and the atmosphere seemed like it would cheer me up, so we just decided to go to Porfirio’s. IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. I’m not particularly picky with food, but was having a bad day and in a mood (on my birthday 😭). I ordered the catch of the day, but because the kitchen was closing in 20 mins (at midnight), they were all out. So I “settled” for Salmon. It wasn’t really to my liking but they went ABOVE AND BEYOND to make sure I had the best experience. Even after the kitchen closed, they encouraged me to order anything off the menu to make me happy for my bday. I got the Arrachera and it was great! My fiancé had the ribeye and ordered a side of jalapeño mashed potatoes and they were incredible. Hands down, the best service. They gave me a bday cake with a sparkler and it tied up everything with a bow! I was so grateful that they all went out of their way to give me an amazing experience when everything else in my day wasn’t going my way. It was a day of a “series of unfortunate events,” but the staff at Porfirio’s made it 10xs better! Even when things seem to be going wrong, I always try to show gratitude for the things that go right and this restaurant was THEE right choice. I HIGHLY recommend you visit this establishment, and order the jalapeño mashed potatoes too!!! I don’t ever write reviews this long, but you all deserve it. Thank you so so much for your service!

I really wish google had more star fidelity for their review system. If I could, I’d give a 4.5 because there are some glaring issues here, but overall compared to the other restaurants on 5th street, it’s easily one of the best. First I’ll start with the good: a variety of Mexican dishes (not Tex-mex) as well as steaks and seafood. If you want somewhere where you will be waited on hand and foot, this is it. They’ll pull your chair back for you, fold your napkin, full 9 “country club” yards service. In my case I’ll also note I almost never dress up, they still seated me without a second glance which to me is a huge plus (I like good meals, but I’m tired after work and don’t like the silly theatre aspects of some upscale restaurants). The food is also quite good. Now, the bad: deserts in my experience were stale, especially the tres-leches. Seriously if management reads these, up the game by not using stale cake, the flavor was amazing but tres leches should never feel stale in your mouth. Second, order your steak on the less cooked side than you want, especially if it’s coming on a skillet. They’re batting .333 here from personal experience, but not in a shoe-leather kind of way, more like “I wish it were just a bit bloodier” way. Overall, I’ll return again and again when I’m back in PDC. Vibe is great, set list on point (albeit generic), and the staff are amazing (seriously, they’re the best part here).

I strongly recommend coming for lunch rather than dinner, as it gets even louder at night with all the street activity and the restaurant pumps the music up even more. If you must come at night, I would avoid sitting at any tables lining the street as vendors and beggers will come up to you across the railing every minute or so throughout your dinner. On my first visit, I had the mole enchiladas and the jericalla for dessert which is incredible. Took off one star cause the music is so loud, another star because I ordered tap water and they served me a $6 bottle of Fiji, and a third star because as you'll see the restaurant responded to my review below asking me to email them and I did and they never responded. The water thing is a scheme many restaurants on 5th pull on tourists, so watch out for it. Just ask for a "vaso de agua" (glass of water) which is free and send back the bottle if they still try to serve you it, which they often do. 2nd visit: Had the Trompo al pastor which is pictured on the menu as pastor tacos which you get to roast yourself tableside but really they just bring it out on a mini grill and then slice it for you. It was pretty good (but I think El Chuleton has better al pastor if you ask them to carve right off the spit and include pineapple.) Also had the Tres Leches Cake for dessert which was excellent. 3rd visit: had the Smoked Cheese with Pasilla Syrup (was ok, I wouldn't recommend it) and the Lemon Pie (good but not as good as jericalla or tres leches).

we went to porfirio's for a nice quick lunch, staff is very nice and the service is good, similarly to much more expensive restaurants the waiters cater to every need and helps you pick out dishes that is best for you. Before taking an order we got a nice welcoming apptizers - tortillas with hot souce and prijoles spread, the tortillas are different here from other places on the fifth Ave and they have "burn spots" that you may or may not like. We didn't like the burned taste so much as it takes over other flavors We orderd all our dishes to share 1)Guacamole - natural taste without meat Very well seasoned, in sharing size. The only down side is that it came with the same tortillas. 2)Mango salmon tartar - definitely the pick of the meal. Great taste and great fish, very well seasoned and in sharing size. Very refreshing! 3. Tissos - tortilla pockets filled with tenderloin : the inside is tasty and we'll seasoned but the dough is a bit dry in the edges and has burn marks from the grill making some spots bitter. All In all and considering the overall price (1035 pesos approx.) porfirio's is a good value for money, nice experience and a fun way to spend the afternoon. We orderd a few plates to share

- The complimentary tostadas and salsa was nice. We went midday, and a good time to go because there are few people. It feels like the courteous attentive service is just for you! The music and decor is outstanding - clearly the reason to visit! The food presentation is often cute and fun. - Tacos de arrachera (x4 steak tacos): Very good! Easily my favorite. However it lacked substance, and once I added a bit of the complimentary beans and some lime juice this taco really singed. - Tacos cochinta pibil (x4 pork tacos): Tasty! My wife's favorite! The flavors were just there! - Tacos de Canasta (basket of x8 tacos): This was a miss for us. I think it is because we didn't know what was coming. We thought it would be 8 tacos filled w/potato, chicken, beans, and pork rinds. Nope! You get 8 tacos - 2beans, 2potato, 2chicken, and 2chicharrón. The upside will be experimenting with the complimentary salsas. - x2 Limonada - x1 Margarita - Total: $775 (~$38.80 US) - Summary: I'd say this place is a outdoor/patio restaurant! It's very nice - from music to service and decor to food everything. Although we liked this place the criticism we would give is the overall price.

The restaurant has a wonderful decoration and food presentation but truly fails creating ambiance and character. One thing that came across odd from the first moment was the ridiculous number of staff working in such tight space between tables with a super rushed manner which made us super uncomfortable and almost got me a headache seeing them too close to us constantly intruding our bubbles with their unnecessary services. Late on when I talked to the manager and gave him my feedback about our experience he explained that their intention being providing service to customers at such a busy time which I don’t think they were serving at more than 30% of their tables. In a few occasions we were still dipping our tortillas into our guacamole when the waiter pulled the plates away. I have taken photos from too many staff working next to each other and us. The food quality wasn’t even close to Mexican food I find in the U.S. which I found sad. Unfortunately our only outside resort foos experience on this trip to Cancun turned out to be too unimpressive due to the loud music and constant interruptions by staff and low food quality.
