Mediocre, non traditional Tonkotsu Ramen and very bad veggie Ramen.
First the Tonkotsu, the soup was very bland and did not have much taste. The dried shiitake mushrooms were not properly soaked in soup and had a cringy, weird taste when bitten into. The noodles did not resemble proper Ramen at all and tasted bland, doughy and too soft. They also broke apart very easily, making them impossible to eat with chopsticks. Overall they had a weird texture and taste. The Chashu pork was okay, but also tasted a bit off. It was almost just cooked pork belly. It was also unusually thick, it would be better to split it into two pieces. I got an extra egg, which was just a normal hard boiled egg. Not marinated, no special orange yolk, not soft boiled, nada.
The veggie Ramen used regular rice based glass noodles, so not Ramen at all, and the menu even said soy based, which it did not taste like at all. The soup stock was simply inedible because it was too bland and had a weird aftertaste.
Takoyaki were too small, hard inside which is unusual and had several small bits of surimi or shrimp inside instead of one chunk of octopus. Was served without takoyaki sauce, instead with a type of red mayo labeled "eel sauce" on the menu. Whatever that is.
Overall, the food was quite okay-ish. Might be satisfying if you never had good Ramen, or at all. But we were lucky to find an actually authentic and delicious Ramen shop afterwards with the same prices just a few blocks closer to the...
Read moreWith an Asian background coming from Toronto, I know my ramens. I’ve been craving good ramen and sushi for a while since I’ve been in Playa. I saw Yamato on Google maps with amazing reviews and high ratings so I had to give it a try to give my honest review. Friendly service but little slow, only one server though so she was quite busy. The ramen soup was a bit bland but the noodles and pork was good (it only comes with one piece, feel like it should come with at least two but it’s cheap to add an extra). The sushi actually wasn’t too bad either, but rice fell apart easily. Tried their mochi (green tea with red bean paste inside), very interesting that it’s served with whipped cream. It’s alright, texture tougher. For playa it’s not bad, best I’ve tried...
Read moreI came early in the evening, so I can't talk about atmosphere but the music was nice and relaxing and the place is clean and organized. I had one the best gyōzas I ever had. And I lived in Japan. It was the steamed version, they gave it a little crust on one side and steamed it to perfection, the sauce that came with it was perfect too. I had the spicy ramen and the broth was divine, I could live off of it, the noodles were perfectly cooked and the chasu was delicious. Everything was fabulous and I KNOW, u won't find such prices. Can't wait to return to have poke and sushi. Go sit there, it's really...
