Love love love this place! We start and end every trip to Progreso here. Let me start with something I learned about the owner on this recent trip, which only makes me love Sol y Mar even more. The owner really loves animals and helps to care for and feed strays in the area. First we noticed he had water bowls out for them. Then we saw a sweet looking dog walk up and he dropped what he was doing to go feed it. He takes food out and takes them over to the side - so don't worry, you won't be disturbed or bothered or probably even notice if you're that rare person that doesn't like dogs. Then we noticed a donation box that's used specifically to buy food for the strays. Please give a donation while you're there! Sadly, there are quite a few strays in Progreso, but the wonderful people of this city pull together and help them out. That makes my heart so happy. Now on to the food and service - Felix is THE MAN and will make your dining experience special and memorable. The drinks are strong and big and delicious - margaritas are not overly sweet and are just right. Pina coladas are topped with nutmeg and are the real deal. We always get the ceviche. I literally couldn't stop eating it last time, even after I was too full already. Any of the grilled fish entrees are great, we particularly like the al diablo. The fish practically melts in your mouth. I recommend getting some tortillas on the side and making tacos. They may not have ocean views, but I love the street view and always enjoy watching the locals go about their day. And the prices are really good, unlike many of the overpriced tourist traps on the malecon. Sol y Mar will continue to be our go to place when...
Read moreMy family and I have loved Sol Y Mar for many years. For a long time expats had their photos on the walls and enjoyed the community check ins via the photos on the walls. Here's the rub - ceviche! It's by far the most affordable & safe for travelers in the area. The menu lists 2 to 4lbs of food. But if you ask for the local special you get a portion for 2 and off menu discounts. 2 meals and 2 alcoholic drinks were $20usd. Enjoy the colorful atmosphere and like family restaurateurs and make at least 1 visit per week or visit as you pop off the cruise ship and enjoy the cheapest port of call in the carribean. As there's not much worth doing aside from beach time at this Port. Trust us we have been here 15 years.
Tip park by New lovers row - artsy and mostly safe parking $15pesos an hour. New art is popping up...
Read moreJust a few steps away from the busy Malecon, this unassuming place has incredible food. There is a great variety of menu options. The prices are reasonable and the portions generous. Finally a decent margarita as well. The coconut fish fingers were addictive. Even when I was stuffed full I kept eating as I craved the fresh flavours. The chicken tacos were also delicious and my partner was in heaven with his ceviche on another visit. The owners take great pride in their food and keeping the place clean. Even wiped down all the condiments after each customer left. And should you have some change taking up space in your wallet, there is a donation jar at the entrance for help keeping the stray cats,...
