Unfortunately, it’s not the finer restaurant /dining place it’s making itself out to be. We had made dining reservations at 8 PM and were hoping for a nice 3-course dinner. Turns out they have a live band playing indoors loudly, to the point where nobody can talk or hear each other properly. The waitress didn’t hear us trying to place an order, and all of the tables were full of boomers that were only there to drink booze and scream to each other instead of talking. The explanation we got was that the band usually played indoors and that all the tables were usually outdoors so “it wasn’t normally this loud”, but tables were indoors today because of the chance of showers. You know what? If you’ve got a change of seating because of unpredictable weather, the band should be able to pivot and adjust their volume accordingly. Easy. This is nothing short of an Irish bar on St. Patrick’s Day. If you want to become a little deaf and party and scream instead of talk, definitely go here! If you were expecting a nice multi-course dinner where you can actually converse with the person next to you, look elsewhere. We ended up leaving after the appetizer since we couldn’t enjoy the meal or each other’s company. Should add that our table was the furthest from the band. It would have been acceptable if the music was loud in the later hours of the evening (10 PM and onwards), but I’ve never been any other place in the world where music blasts louder than an arena concert at the earlier dinnertime hours. Video from our hotel room a block away to get a sense of how incredibly loud this is. 3 stars since at least the food we had (mixed cheese/charc platter) and the Chilean Merlot wine, were both great. Also the staff...
Read moreHeard about Taninos from a few friends and saw posts on Facebook about it. Decided to give it a try last night. Wow! The atmosphere is fabulous with it's shabby chic design and beautifully cozy, almost fairytale like garden area seating. We were accommodated without issue, despite not having a reservation. The service was outstanding, with our waiter Marco being very attentive, but respectful of our wish not to rush through the evening. We started with cocktails. My husband had the Classic Martini (one of the best he's had), and I asked for a Negroni with the substitution of Mezcal instead of the customary gin. I chose the smokier 400 Conejos Cuishe, which made for the best Mezcal Negroni I've ever had. Ordered our appetizers when we had almost finished our drinks. The mussels came out piping hot and so good! We also enjoyed the Beet and Pear salad which was beautifully presented and tasted amazing. When we had almost finished our appetizers, our waiter came to take our main orders and our wine selection. The bottle of Abrazo del Alma Malbec was exquisite and served minutes before receiving our mains. We thoroughly enjoyed the Mushrooms Risotto, and the Sea Bass (Catch of the Day) was wonderfully crisp on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside, and paired very well with the bed of risotto and light salad it was served with. We've wintered in Puerto Morelos for 2 to 3 months the last two years, and had our go-to favourites for restaurants, but Taninos rockedeted to the top of our list with last night's meal. We will be returning before we leave Puerto Morelos this year, and will definitely come back a few times...

As it was my birthday, my sister and I wanted to find somewhere special.
After our original plan had fallen through, we stumble upon Tanino's...a birthday wish I hadn't yet made came true.
The back of the restaurant opens on to a beautiful garden terrace which lends itself to a tranquil atmosphere and perfect setting for the culinary experience that awaits.
The food was simply outstanding. While it would be easy to deep dive into each one ... the tuna was simple sensational. The quality of the fish married with the mezcal and orange marinade (we were given extra 😋)...Michelin star quality dish.
Our server Jonathan was attentive as well as allowing us to practice some Spanish. He also suggested we could take our bottle of wine home as we headed towards desserts and coffee territory...a Tanino policy that I've rarely experienced but was greatly appreciated.
Yet the really quality of service was the evident team ethic as staff were able to interchange without confusion.
It was clear from the start the staff were properly trained without them losing their individuality...something confirmed later by the charismatic and engaging Brazilian manager.
The added treat of a birthday crepe and a long and engaging chat about the restaurant, staff, as well as an insight into their ethos, was unexpected as it was welcome.
Only regret? We didn't have the chance to return before the end of our vacation but I'm positive it won't be the last time if we're anywhere near...
