It's MY good fortune that Smokey O's, a true Texas Pit-master BBQ took the risk to open on Tulum's 5 Ave Sur long before there was one-way traffic on C 5/7 bringing traffic through La Veleta past O's.
Everything is top quality from the meats (angus brisket) to best available ribs and chicken available in Mexico. The side dishes are all home made and truly define "comfort food". Its a simple menu and simple bar but all made with care.
Open air comfort, ceiling fans, picnic tables ala Texas style, outdoors in Tulum (comp off), what could be better? The hosts genuinely make you feel at home and comfortable. English or Spanish, mingle or chat, I've found the people that come to O's come for the food and stay because its an extremely friendly and comfortable. La Veleta's version of "Cheers" whether you are a guest or a local; you are welcome and included. Just each out, say hello, people are genuinely happy to include you in a drink or an evening.
Smoking meat is an art and science; each of the smoked items has its own smoke time, temp and rest time. Some day's a thicker brisket slab or rack of ribs takes a bit longer to finish and IT IS WORTH THE WAIT. Definitely not to be be rushed. Enjoy a refreshment.
The entire evening's smoked menu begins in the morning for the the evening service and when it's ready, its ready; not a moment sooner. When removed from smoker and being served the glistening juices and aroma is so inviting.
Plan to arrive normal dinner hour or call ahead to reserve your favorite. Beware, each day's supply of smoked delights is fresh and the total estimated for each evenings service; when gone, its gone, sold out. Snooze, you lose! They do an incredible Tomato delivery service also. Their goal IS to sell out, but on the rare occasion when there is fresh smoked food remaining, its donated to a local food kitchen.
We've met the owners, family, even puppy Gaia (love her too) and the many many friends and guests who come regularly; honestly, I feel a part of the family even though I'm "just a customer". They truly appreciate each guest, enjoy sharing this style of food with different cultures and will make your dinner pair nicely with signature drinks. Give them a try, you will...

Read moreWe found Smokey O’s BBQ on Google Maps. What stood out was Texas Style BBQ, which we’ve been craving. We’ve been driving all around the country for about 3-1/2 months and no where that we can find, has there been any true BBQ like we enjoyed in the States. We pulled up to check it out and liked what we saw. We went in and we’re greeted most friendly. We inquired as to the authenticity of the brisket so the owner, OC, gave us a sample taste. We were sold. He let us taste the coleslaw as well, and we liked that equally as good. Once we were served, OC came by our table and we asked him about Smokey O’s BBQ came to be. We know what wood that is used for smoking is a big key to flavor, so what wood is he using way down here in Mexico compared to what is used in Texas. I don’t know what kind of wood it was, but OC said he experimented with many kinds to find the right one. Success!!!! OC, you are an excellent SmokeMaster!!! One more note….. we were so enamored with our food, I almost forgot to take pics of the food. Sorry people. You’ll have to trust my review….. The...
