It should go without saying but 1st degree burns SHOULD NOT be an ingredient in a cocktail but its part of the experience at Bekeb. There is a smoked cocktail on the menu where they use wood chips to provide smoke into the cocktail which would be cool except they use a butane hand torch to ignite the wood chips. When our waiter came to our table with this contraption I said in Spanish that using a butane hand torch for that is dangerous. He laughed- then proceeded to ignite the torch and send fully ignited wood chips all over my wife. The wood chips burned through her favorite dress all the way to her skin (see the attached pic and imagine how having a burning wood chip would feel against your skin). The waiter then apologized but then acted as if nothing happened.
I'm a professional chef and you use butane hand torches to sear or caramelize products that won't fly away- like a steak or a creme brule. The reason is because the force of the butane flame is enough to send smaller things like wood chips flying. This is why when you go to legitimate and safe speakeasies, they use a smoke gun which heats up the chips without sending them flying.
To add insult to injury when we asked for the check the waiter came back with the full bill and asked for a 15% tip. This is after severely burning my wife and destroying her favorite dress. So if you want the adventure of having your dress ruined and extra trip to the farmacia for burn cream, Bekeb is the...
Read moreAfter visiting San Miguel for the last 12 days, I was hoping to save the best for last, and unfortunately that’s exactly what happened.
Had I known how incredible the visit to Bekeb would be, I would have made it a point to get out here far earlier in the trip, and much more than one time - everything was fantastic from start to finish.
It was a slow Monday night, however my server - Marco - handled himself beautifully, not hovering over my table, and very available when I needed him with recommendations for both food and drink. I stayed for around 2 hours and tried a handful of their signature cocktails, along with the tacos Cochinita, Ensenada de Camarones, and the Tostadas de Atún. The food was consistently some of the best had here in SMA, and the cocktails were absolutely world-class, with layers and depth I rarely get to enjoy.
As the dining room emptied I moved over to the bar and was introduced to the bartender - Andy - who was responsible for the creation of my drinks this evening, and with his recommendation of the Milk Punch Volume 1, I enjoyed one final drink before signing off for the evening.
Hats off to the crew and ownership at Bekeb for creating such a wonderful experience for guests, and I cannot wait to return to try their creations...
Read moreTook Fabiola’s cocktail class at Bekeb on our trip to San Miguel and it was one of the best times of our whole vacation. Bekeb is in a beautiful location and is just the right size to enjoy yourself but not get overpowered by a crowd. Fabiola was AMAZING and such a treasure. Great cocktail lessons/drinks as I now know more about tequila and mezcal then ever before. And her cocktails were as tasty as they were stunning. Like drinking liquid art! But Fabiola’s interesting conversation was the cherry on top of a great time. The staff were incredibly kind and attentive and the appetizers were delicious. Just the perfect selection. We came for the class and stayed for the atmosphere and conversations.
Would 100% recommend taking the class because you learn how to make manageable cocktails that will make you look like a pro. However, I believe you should only take the class if you are interested in her skill as Fabiola has an immense amount of knowledge that deserves an enormous amount of respect. If you are just interested in acting as if you are there for the lesson but act like fools, don’t waste her time. Either way, Bekeb is a gem in a town that has a lot of...
