Having moved permanently to Tangier, Morocco after living in Manhattan, New York City, I was surprised to learn that Tangier’s first Starbucks opened in early 2019.
Starbucks is inside the impressive Tangier train station (Gare Tanger Ville), directly on the left after you walk through the glass doors of the main entrance. There are also tables and chairs outside the building, bordered with flowers, and a few tables in front of the Starbucks inside entrance. The location is convenient to anyone shopping at Tanger City Center.
This Starbucks could be anywhere in the world since they are consistent in uncluttered modern design.
After entering, I was warmly greeted by a friendly young English-speaking Moroccan woman, and when ordering at the counter I was served courteously and quickly.
My coffee, served in a large Starbucks glass cup with saucer, cost 26 Dirhams, which is high for Tangier. (You may also order a small cortado in a paper cup for 18 Dirhams.) That is what I had paid several years ago at another Starbucks next to the Carre Eden Shopping Center in Marrakech. The price is also about what you would pay for a small cup in America or Europe.
At this Starbucks inside the Gare Tanger Ville, its air-conditioning keeps you very cool in the warm months and pleasingly warm in the winter, so you are always comfortable.
The WiFi works well, so I discretely called my sister on Skype to tell her about my first visit to the only Starbucks in Tangier.
Smoking or use of e-cigarettes is not allowed. There are comfortable chairs at tables inside and outside, but I prefer the tables with cushioned leather seats that are against the back glass wall. Credit and debit cards are accepted.
My only complaint is that Starbucks cards and gift cards issued in the United States and in other countries are not usable in the various Starbucks in Morocco. In Morocco, Starbucks has its own card which you can obtain and charge up.
There is no toilet inside this Starbucks but Gare Tanger Ville has several clean toilets scattered about inside the...
Read moreDear Starbucks,
The "Starbucks on the go machines" in Morocco are a complete disappointment. The so-called "chilled coffee" comes out lukewarm and tastes terrible. This is unacceptable for a brand like Starbucks.
To make matters worse, these machines are placed in gas stations across Morocco, and the staff overseeing them force you to pay, even when the product is returned on the spot due to the fact that the cold coffee is anything but cold.
As someone who has been loyal to Starbucks for 25 years, it’s infuriating to see such a drastic decline in quality. This needs to be fixed...
