I'd spent some time looking for a hotel in Alkmaar, something that would be modern and elegant, not old-fashioned. I'm sure some people are put off by the idea of hotel rooms above a restaurant, but it was clear from the website pictures that the owners had a vision for a stylish restaurant with equally stylish rooms. And that's exactly what we found.||||The restaurant is closed on Mondays, so we had a little bit of difficulty reaching someone who could check us into the hotel (because of our international phones). A very charming, friendly person arrived and made us feel very welcome, and took us up to a really unique room - upper floor, beamed ceiling and ultra modernized. The room was good-sized, although it has very limited hanging/storage space, with good reading lights and air conditioning. (Leaving windows open would have been a little noisy since the hotel is in the heart of old town, and would not have provided enough ventilation.) The bed was extremely comfortable, nice light from the windows, and an ultra-modern bathroom area. ||There's a huge stand-alone tub, a tiled walk in shower, modern sink and toilet. As others have mentioned, the toilet and shower do not have doors or curtains; it's hard to imagine, I know, but it makes sense when you see it. It didn't bother us (we've been married for 39 years!), but as a practical matter, it would make more sense to have a door or screen on the toilet area. That way, someone could use the sink area or use the tub while someone else is using the toilet. Maybe something for the owners to consider. ||A highlight is the lovely breakfast served in the restaurant. It's table service, not a buffet and it was probably the nicest, freshest, tastiest breakfast we had on the whole trip. Great cappuccinos, and a charming woman who is in charge of breakfast brought everything to us -- an assortment of fresh rolls and pastries, cheese and meat, yogurt and fruit, and eggs cooked to order. ||We enjoyed staying at the hotel and if you are flexible with a few quirks, it's a fun and...

Read moreReally central location in Alkmaar. We stayed in the apartment separate from the hotel as two couples. Apartment was spacious and enough room for four. Good amenities if you required them. |However, the downside was that the apartment was generally quite unclean. The floors were dirty, and left your socks or feet filthy. There was an issue with plumbing meaning the bathroom sink was completely blocked by the evening of day two of our four night stay. The pillows were uncomfortable in both bedrooms, we all experienced neck pain during the stay. The WiFi did not work at all, and when we asked if someone could sort it nothing was done - two of us were still working so had to use phone hotspots. There was only one mirror, in the bathroom, so difficult for all of us to get ready at once. If you do stay in the apartment, make sure to speak with them about check out prior - as we checked out on a Monday and found the main hotel to be closed. We tried calling and messaging but no response and had to post key and hope for the best. Could be a really nice place, but appears to be used as a back up place and not much thought or cleaning...
