A well known South Indian restaurant opens its doors in Amsterdam and it is just as good as back home. And dare I say, better in some ways. Location: (5/5) Middle of all the action. Just a stones throw away from museumplein, Anjappar is easily accessible by bicycle as well as public transport. It sits on the corner of a building on the main road. Might be a bit harder to spot from going from museumplein side as the building banner faces the opposite direction on the road. Just keep you eyes open for a red restaurant sign. Interiors: (4/5) The interiors are really nice, the seating is on the first floor and on a mezzanine. There is good attention to detail on the pictures and the wallpapers which are similar to the chain in India. The colour of the couches as well is quite reminiscent of the place in India. It’s a functional space. Food & Drink: (5/5) I was absolutely thrilled to find that the Indian Meals was available here. This is a dish that contains multiple curries and vegetables along with rice and an indian bread. It is meant to be a one stop shop for all the food. The tamarind curry was so good, it tasted exactly like how my grandmom used to make it. Incredible you authentic. The other aspects of the fish meals was great. The fried fish as well as the curry were great. The mushroom vegetable was also interesting as it coupled the flavour of peas. After the dinner enjoyed a fabulous cub of filter coffee. Nothing better to finish a South Indian meal. One of the best places for Biryani as well. Especially the chicken 65 one and the mutton one. Cooked to perfection. Service: (5/5) The owner is very kind and explains all about their journey to set it up. You get some excellent service here where they are concerned about your well being and also seem to have a lot of people coming back to eat here again. The chef Selvam Master made some delicious food and Thaya was part of the service team and really did a fantastic job. Summary: (5/5) Looking for authentic South Indian food? This is one of the better options in the city. The authentic flavours and the spread of dishes certainly give it a bit of an edge. All in all a great experience and will certainly be back to try more of the menu.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Anjappar, and I must say, it was an absolute delight from start to finish. From the moment we stepped in, the ambiance exuded warmth and comfort, setting the stage for a memorable dining experience. To start off, we indulged in their hot and sour vegetable soup, which was a perfect balance of flavors – tangy, spicy, and wonderfully aromatic. It truly awakened the palate and left us eager for more. Next up was the tandoori pomfret fish, a true highlight of the meal. The fish was impeccably cooked, with a smoky flavor that complemented the delicate flesh beautifully. Each bite was a testament to the chef's skill and dedication to quality. Moving on to the Nattu Koddi Biryani, we were treated to a fragrant and flavorful dish that surpassed all expectations. The tender chicken, aromatic spices, and fluffy rice came together harmoniously, creating a symphony of taste that left us craving for more. Accompanying the biryani was the classic parotta with mutton curry. The parotta was flaky and melt-in-your-mouth delicious, while the mutton curry was rich, spicy, and packed with robust flavors. It was the perfect pairing and a testament to the restaurant's commitment to authentic, high-quality cuisine. To round off our meal, we indulged in Jigarthanda and Falooda with ice cream, two iconic desserts that provided the perfect sweet ending to our culinary journey. Both desserts were expertly crafted, with just the right balance of sweetness and creaminess, leaving us thoroughly satisfied. Overall, my dining experience at Anjappar was nothing short of exceptional. The food was exquisite, the service impeccable, and the ambiance inviting. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an unforgettable culinary adventure.

First off, the vibes were on point. The place had that cozy yet happening feel, setting the perfect stage for a major foodie escapade. And guess what? I went all out – starting with the Samosa and Chicken 65. The Samosa, oh my! Each bite was a crisp and flavorful explosion of potatoes, peas, and spices. The pastry was perfectly golden and flaky, with a delightful crunch that played harmoniously with the rich, well-seasoned filling. The accompanying mint chutney added a refreshing contrast, making this appetizer a brilliant choice to tantalize the palate. Now, let's talk about the Chicken 65. This dish is legendary, and Anjappar's rendition did not disappoint. The bite-sized pieces of succulent chicken were expertly fried to a crisp perfection, and the seasoning was an exquisite dance of spice and heat. It was fiery, flavorful, and utterly addictive. The cooling effect of the Kingfisher beer, with its refreshing bubbles and mild bitterness, balanced out the spice in the best way possible. And then, the main event - the Fish Meal. I must say, Anjappar has mastered the art of Chettinad cooking. The kingfish was impeccably cooked, tender and flaky, and coated in a luscious, aromatic gravy that made my taste buds sing. The blend of spices and herbs, the depth of flavors, and the perfect level of heat combined to create a dish that was nothing short of divine. Paired with fragrant basmati rice and crispy papadams, it was a symphony of textures and tastes that I won't soon forget. All in all, Anjappar Amsterdam is a must-visit. The food was next level, and it's as authentic as it gets when it comes to Chettinad cuisine. It's a vibe that will leave your taste buds begging for more.

tl;dr: One of the best restaurants I have ever been in my life. Authentic Chettinad food, from the Tamil Nadu state of India, with one of the politest staff, ever! Now getting in the details: big shoutout to Vighnesh, Aboli and Vi(d)hi (I hope I am not butchering your name, apologies if I am) - best customer service from an Indian restaurant that I have had in sometime, and believe me I have had it all over, in India, USA and other parts of Europe. The restaurant was extremely busy, but the energy of these folks waiting people was amazing, and they did it with a joyous smile on their faces. I saw some tables/customers to be rude, but these 3 people really took "Athithi Devo Bhavah" (A guest is like a God!) seriously! Kudos and keep up the good work! Now about the food: The non-veg and veg platter are a must try - I personally don't prefer fish, so asked to skip on one of them - and the staff was very kind to honour the request. Eventually did try the fish, and it was surprisingly fresh and delicious. They use goat meat for mutton, and not lamb meat, which was refreshingly different and tasty. Then tried the Chef's Special Thali, which was too big even for me :) Mr. Dhari, the manager was also very polite answering questions when I had called earlier to book a table for 10 people. Basically ask for suggestions when in doubt, but you could go for any dish on the menu, and it will be great. Planning to visit again, hopefully soon enough. Cheers

The gentlemen serving us were nice. That's about where the nice'ness of the place ended. I wouldn't recommend unless you're deseparately craving for Indian food and completely incapable of making it at home ! Price quality ratio is very poor (Eur 20 for 3 chicken leg pieces!) There was fish, chicken soup, and mutton on our table - the gravies all tasted the same. Everything gets charged for, everything! We ordered Eur 100 worth of things, yet they charged us for 2 spoon fulls of ghee that we asked for our 2 year old (the manger disagrees, but you can see the bill for yourself). I found that really petty, especially in a place that prides itself for it's hospitality. Anyways when we were checking the bill in the end, the lady at the counter barked at us (I understand you might be busy, but she literally yelled at us without even looking up from what she was doing. All this though the place was nowhere close to being full ) So we just paid and left. And surprise surprise we never received the rice that was supposed to be there with the mutton curry. There are lots of other small things too that we don't even want to mention here. Either way, I'd NOT recommend this place, unfortunately, inspite of the reviews!
