Well hellooooo Breadwinner. Okay, I’m sceptic when it comes to bagels 🥯 outside of the US. We have more bagel places in Amsterdam, but let’s call it what it is, those are just bagel shaped breads okay. I’ve been to all other Amsterdam bagel places once and never visited them again. Now Breadwinner, they surprised me bigly(!) You need to understand my reference when I talk bagels. So I am a fan of (top of mind) Bagelsaurus (MA), Broad Nosh (NY), Sunrise (ME) Tastewise Breadwinner comes close to a US bagel, I’d say they are 90% there. There’s a hint of that malty aroma that you need. Texture wise they are 95% there. It’s dense, and chewy. They also toast great, don’t burn, don’t lose their taste or texture. Yet there is something in there that I can’t put my finger on that is not completely bagel. I’m still trying to uncover what that is. That said, stellar bagel. Price wise a bit steep, €3,- is the price of half a bread. A bagel shouldn’t cost more than 2,- per piece. They don’t sell bakers dozens, you just have to buy them per piece. Never tried one of their bagel sandwiches, if I ever do, I’ll add a review. Want a good bagel? Go to these guys, you wont be disappointed, but bring your wallet. FYI not a sit down kind of place, just a few seats. It’s all made fresh, so there could be a wait. People friendly. Not accessible with wheelchair. English...
Read moreYesterday, I got a sandwich from Breadwinner for the first time. I walk by it 2 to 3 times a week, and there's always a line of people. I had to try a sandwich.
First of all, the name Breadwinner is misleading. I thought there would be a variety of types and sizes of sandwiches. A "sandwich" is just a bagel. Okay, they do have different flavors, though.
On the advice of the young lady who took my order, I got a salmon sandwich with cream cheese and capers. I'm used to raw salmon, so this was a new experience for me. Was it tasty? It depends on your preference. I personally prefer raw salmon, which I find more flavorful. Was it special? My answer is no. This sandwich cost me €13.00, and I only ate half of it. I gave the other half to my husband, who prefers smoked salmon.
Conclusion: an expensive lunch that didn't meet my expectations. I don't understand why the prices are so high at Breadwinner. This was my first and last time buying lunch there. There are other places where I can eat just as well, if not...
Read moreNot only is the owner Jon an upstanding citizen, he also happens to making the finest bagels this side of the Atlantic. When I first tasted his peppery, sweet pastrami betwixt a cacophony of bouncy, doughy love, I thought I was back on the shores of New York City, dancing alongside a yankee vagrant, with the thrill of the concrete jungle beside me. Surely these bagels must be made of magic and witchcraft? There is little other explanation for their sheer deliciousness. If I could award him a key to city, I would. Unfortunately I am not a mayor. Nevertheless, Breadwinner bagels has won the key to my heart.
This is not a paid review. I genuinely want to eat these bagels each waking minute of my life. Alas, i cannot. I would be poor. And fat. But happy. Truly happy.
God bless breadwinner. We love...
