I did a lot of research to find a good fondue restaurant in Amsterdam and decided that Fondue & Fondue was perfect for what I wanted. We had a reservation for 9 p.m. The server told us about a three-course menu where you can choose an appetizer, main course, and dessert for €35 per person. It sounded perfect, so we went with that. The fondue was amazing—generous servings and truly delicious. We couldn’t even finish the main course because we wanted to save room for dessert.
When dessert came, it was around 10 p.m, when the restaurant closes. No other guests had arrived after us, and the tables that were occupied before us were leaving, so we ended up being the last table. The server started cleaning up and resetting the tables, bringing in the outdoor signs, etc. It started to feel like we were being rushed out, which made us uncomfortable.
When we asked for the bill, we noticed that “Tip not included” was circled at the bottom. I thought this was odd for Europe, as tipping isn’t generally expected unless the service is exceptional. I ignored it, but when the server brought the card machine, he directly asked how much I wanted to pay. I immediately felt pressured to leave a tip, even though I didn’t want to due to the rushed experience. I ended up tipping regretfully.
The restaurant closes at 10 p.m., and our reservation was at 9 p.m. You are able to make reservations online until 9:45 p.m., so it doesn’t seem fair to expect a table to leave in just an hour, especially when ordering a three-course meal and a bottle of wine. We were practically chugging the wine at the end. It was not a great dining experience, and I still feel uneasy about it. Just really not an experience you want to have when trying to have an enjoyable dinner. Quite a shame since the food...
Read moreWalked into an empty restaurant 15 minutes after opening while on vacation to surprise my wife. Was told we could sit but we but we would only be allowed an hour to eat because of their full reservation list at 7. Every other place we had eaten at while on vacation was extremely inviting and told us to take our time and enjoy. This came to a surprise. As we were rushed to a decision another couple walked in with a reservation at 7 and was greeted warmly while I was pushed behind a glass door during their three minute conversation. We decided not to eat here based on the fact we did not want to be rushed. We walked to another local eatery and were welcomed warmly to a very busy restaurant. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was cozy. As frequent travelers to Amsterdam we may give them another try but we will probably try other fondue restaurants in the city before we go to this one again.
In response to the owner. When a guest enters and requests a table and is shoved behind a door only to be told "You can eat but you must hurry". You have no choice but to give an honest rating. 1 star was all I could honestly give based on how we were treated. We will be back in a few months and we will attempt to visit your establishment. If we don't get shoved back out of the door from an empty restaurant I...
Read moreI visited this place with a party of 10 people on a Wednesday night. We had reserved a table well in advance but it was clear when we arrived the place had been overbooked. I thought the fondue itself was nice, but we waited 1.5hours for it which felt that was slightly longer than necessary. The staff were also nice but not very focussed ; the waiter forgot to bring out our bread with the fondue until we asked several timesa; and alsoby the time our salads came some people had already left our party of 10 as we'd been there over 2 hours. Also, the dishwasher had to collect dirty dishes from the kitchen upstairs and carry them down to be washed, whichwmeamt constantly walking through thetdining area. He knocked my girlfriend on the head as well (where else do you see someone walking through where people are sitting carrying dirty dishes?)
Oh and the Aircon was leaking water from the ceiling 0.5m away from me so we had to move our bags (which is not their fault, but still, come on guys)
I normally always give a place the benefit of the doubt, but this restaurant was pushing it too much for me. Wine was good, fondue was good, but the rest...
