From the moment I stepped foot into Hemelse Modder, a true culinary gem tucked away in the heart of Amsterdam, I knew I was in for an unforgettable dining experience. The restaurant is a symphony of inviting warmth, tasteful decor, and a vibrant atmosphere that collectively reflect the soul of this beautiful city.
The star of the show was, without doubt, the brilliantly curated food menu, a testament to the chef's passion for crafting gastronomic masterpieces. Offering the option of a 3, 4, or 5-course menu, Hemelse Modder caters to all palates and hunger levels. Each dish was not merely a meal, but a mesmerising journey that told a story of the finest local produce and a deep understanding of culinary arts.
The care and creativity poured into each course are nothing short of culinary poetry. From the first bite to the last, the flavours danced on my tongue in a delightful ballet of savoury, sweet, and umami notes, perfectly balanced to create a harmony that was almost musical. The food is beautifully presented, with the aesthetics of each plate rivaling the taste in their excellence.
But a memorable dining experience is not just about the food. It's also about the service, and this is where our waiter, Joeri, truly shined. His impeccable service was the gold thread that wove the evening together into a tapestry of gastronomic delight. Joeri had a genuine passion for hospitality and a keen attention to detail, ensuring that every aspect of our evening was flawless. From his insightful recommendations and thorough knowledge of the menu, to his attentiveness and quick service, Joeri contributed greatly to making our night not just special, but extraordinary.
In conclusion, Hemelse Modder is more than just a restaurant; it's an experience, a journey of flavors and service that transcends the ordinary. The combination of exquisite food, immaculate service from Joeri, and the overall ambience makes it a must-visit when in Amsterdam. A meal at Hemelse Modder is not just dining; it's a memory in the making. And it is a memory that you will cherish, long after the last morsel has been savoured and the last drop of wine has...
Read moreWe enjoyed a relaxing evening at Hemelse Modder. The restaurant offers two menus - a Seasonal and a Chef's from which you build a Three ( €59), Four (€61) or Five (€69) course meal. You can mix and match between the two menus.
We chose to order off the seasonal menu and went with the Tarte tatin of green asparagus and peas with ginger cream cheese, ginger compote and marinated shallot. Perfect start to the evening that we paired with a French Sauvignon Blanc.
For the soup course with both chose the bouillon of roasted tomato and thyme, with paprika basil tapenade and fennel croutons. The broths popped with flavor from all the spices with the fennel croutons being savory treats with each bite.
For the main ciurse I chose the pan fried Atlantic hake fillet with mussel saffron sauce, roseval, roseval chips and marinated radish. My wife went with the grilled lamb steak with horseradish gravy, parsley root puree, roasted parsley root and young carrots. The mussels suace really enhanced the flavor of the hake and was also nice to dip the accompanying new potatoes in as well. The lamb was a perfect medium rare and melted in our mouths.
For the cheese course we tried a flight of the Dutch and the French cheeses. I really liked the Dutch goat cheese which was so smooth and creamy. The French Bleu cheese was excellent as well.
For dessert we went with the dark and white mousse. It was so decadent and featured a sliver of milk chocolate.
We spent around 3.5 hours there service was excellent. The coursing was slow between the soup and main course and after dessert otherwise excellent attention without being obstrusive.
I think the dinner was excellent. Probably a "one off" but I would definitely...
Read moreI had high (no Amsterdam puns intended) expectations of this restaurant but was extremely disappointed in the service and food. We had to wait on average 20-25 minutes between courses and when they arrived the food lacked any flavor. Our server checked in on us twice throughout the 2.5 hour, 4 course meal where we had more interaction with the food runners. DO NOT order the pumpkin soup, it was more a shiitake shroom broth at best and had minuscule portions of pumpkin which did not even taste of pumpkin. Overall the food lacked any flavor, flair and for the price I was very very very disappointed. Even more so when I started to feel sick during the meal. For a restaurant that’s been around since 1984, it needs to revamp its menu and try their own food before serving it to guests. Cherry on top was the server who we only saw after he dropped off the checked asked if we wanted to leave gratuity, oblivious to the fact he was missing for the most of the experience. After having dinner at Choux the night before and such an amazing meal, this experience is one I wish to forget at Hemelse Modder which means heavenly mud in Dutch. I imagine mud has...
