I drink at this place with some frequency, and tonight I had hoped to taste the food as well, which is highly praised in many reviews. Whether this is justified I cannot say, because of the typical Dutch service provided. After ten minutes, the slovenly dressed unshaven waiter was finally disposed to come outside. (The place was not even half full, with most people sitting on the terrace). Menu: unavailable, since it was only displayed inside. A Dutch waiter cannot be bothered to memorize it. I therefore ordered a snack, which was good but definitely a snack. So I decided to order another snack. After a twenty minute wait, it became clear that the waiter had not bothered to remember this either. (The place was still only half full, he wasn't exactly rushed off his feet.) When I went inside to settle the bill, he suddenly remembered. Half-hearted excuse as if this was a daily occurrence. One hour for two beers and a snack, no dinner. A disgrace. Not even worth a tip. Read moreCentrally located and reasonably priced, Captien & Co is a very cosy cafe, clearly used regularly by locals. Homely ambience, with friendly staff. There is a decent cafe type menu (there is a menu in English) with many small dishes, as well a mains etc. I had a local draught IPA to start, having walked a lot, which was citrusy and hoppy, very refreshing. I ordered some bitterballen - a very tradional Dutch snack. Deep fried balls filled with shredded like beef in a sauce, with mustard for dipping. Very tasty and moreish. I also ordered some small vegetarian spring rolls with chilli sauce with just the right hot bite. These were accompanied by a very pleasant glass of primitivo. A great little place to relax after a hard day's museum going before heading out for the night. You almost feel Dutch. There is a decent selection of wines, beers and, of...

The waitress was rude! We waited over 15 minutes and she walked by us and made eye contact several times. She just did not want us there. One of the local ladies told us we’d live eating here, but when we got up to leave - even she said she didn’t blame us.
If you’re visiting Amsterdam … do NOT go here. A local recommended it to us, some of the people eating there were nice, but if you’re not a local … you’re not welcome here (at least not by the staff working 4/21 dinner service).
AVOID!!! There are superior options everywhere...
