Visited as a party of six. Mangia had been recommended to us, but turned out to be our only negative experience during our visit to Amsterdam. We pre-booked as advised, but upon turning up they didn't seem to know our party size, immediately rushing to push some tables together. They then told us we only had an hour, something that was never mentioned when booking.
The place felt less like a relaxed restaurant, and more like a cattle market. Staff seemed rushed and miserable. Patrons were rushed in and out. A lady came to take our drinks, the first two of us ordered a water and a sparkling water - she seemed to take this as an order for water for the table and immediately walked off without asking the rest of us for our drink orders. Based on this and the experience so far, several members decided not to bother ordering drinks and instead wait for a bar elsewhere.
A gentleman (we seemed to rarely get the same staff member twice) came to take our food order. Some of us ordered starters, everyone ordered mains. The food came as and when - some people had starters and mains served at the same time. I didn't receive my main until several members were already partway through their meal. There was no indication of if it was coming, and trying to flag down someone was impossible as they were rushed off their feet.
One party member discovered partway through that some ingredients were missing from their toppings, having assumed they might find it underneath everything else. We managed to flag down a waitress, who seemed like she was going to suggest that he'd eaten them(!). She didn't apologise or ask for any details and asked if she could take the plate. A replacement dish came slightly later - we weren't asking for a replacement, but appreciate it nevertheless, although it only added five anchovies and she took the knife and didn't replace it.
When we finished our mains the table was cleared. Nobody came to ask if we wanted desserts or drinks. Nobody came to ask if everything was ok throughout our time there. Actually, we sat there for the remainder of our 1hr slot just being ignored. During this time, we overheard tables near us complaining about incorrect dishes, not being served, etc. The atmosphere was really unpleasant, and everything just felt rushed.
Shame as the food itself was actually really good, although overpriced. Maybe it was just an off night, but I'll never return to find out. Do yourself a favour and go off the beaten track - there's a lot of great restaurants hidden round the streets of Amsterdam, that will greet you and welcome you in. I wish I'd not wasted my time or...
Read moreMe and my friends go here very often. Whenever we decide we are getting pizza, Mangia is the place to go. However our recent experience was really not that positive. And I usually would not write a bad review but we have been here twice in one month and the service was very poor.
We were seated at a table right behind/above the oven, so it was boiling hot. On top of that, there was a group of around 20 girls who were screaming and laughing so loud we couldn’t hear our own thoughts. It took a while to get the waitresses attention to ask to order something. She was very not nice, not a bit of a smile on her face and she was not even trying to understand what exactly we were ordering even though we were screaming on top of our lungs to her to make sure she hears. Eventually our drinks arrived, that went fine. However, the pizza took forever to come and mind you we ordered 3 pizzas for 5 people, so they didn’t have that much of a tough job trying to make sure 5 pizzas arrive at the same time. Either way 2 pizzas arrived and then we had to wait another 15-20 minutes for the third pizza (the simplest Margherita) to arrive. The Margherita had ham on it, which I did not order but we were so hungry we just ate it. Then we had problems getting any waiters attention to order more drinks and when we ordered, the waiter gathered our old drinks that I still had at least 1/4th or 1/5th left and he put his fingers into the glass while taking it away… so I didn’t bother asking for him to leave it since I still had some drink left to drink. This already happened to me the first time I was there that month. Very weird way of picking up the glass 😅
When it came to the bill they right away said they won’t be splitting it because it would be a hassle. And we said we want the ham which was in the Margherita to be deleted from the bill because we didn’t order that. The waitress was very unhappy and frankly quite rude about it and didn’t even try to understand what we mean.
All in all a poor experience. On top of that they increased their prices a lot. We noticed they were increased twice in the past few months. Not sure if the pizza and service is worth the...
