A purr-fect destination for cat lovers! If you’re a cat person—or even just mildly fond of felines—the KattenKabinet is an absolute must-see. This charming and unique museum is dedicated entirely to cats in art, history, and culture, offering an experience that’s as quirky as it is captivating.
Housed in a beautiful historic canal house, the museum’s interior feels intimate and personal, with rooms filled with cat-themed paintings, sculptures, posters, and memorabilia spanning centuries. From classical artwork to whimsical modern pieces, the collection showcases the many ways cats have been muses, companions, and symbols in the world of art.
What makes the KattenKabinet especially delightful for cat lovers is its immersive and unapologetically feline-focused nature. Every corner of the museum is a quiet celebration of the cat’s grace, mystery, and enduring charm. Even a few real cats are lounging about, adding to the authentic, cozy atmosphere.
The museum’s courtyard and surrounding area are equally picturesque—perfect for a peaceful stroll or a moment to relax after the indoor exhibits.
In short, KattenKabinet is a hidden gem that speaks directly to the hearts of cat enthusiasts. Whether you're an art lover, a cat fanatic, or simply looking for something off the beaten path in Amsterdam, this delightful museum is well...
Read moreWe visited KattenKabinet with a €3 discount with the I Amsterdam City Card, but even with this reduction, the ticket price felt quite steep. Unfortunately, the value for money here doesn’t fully match the experience.
In terms of uniqueness, KattenKabinet absolutely stands out—it’s the only museum in tbe world dedicated solely to cats, which makes it a fun and quirky destination. It does have some interesting pieces, including a Picasso, which adds a surprising highlight. However, the overall quality of the artwork is inconsistent; many pieces are simply widely available posters, and few reach the level of fine art you'd expect in a museum. One thing I did enjoy was a small area people have left dedications to their cats.
This is more of a quick-stop museum; most visitors will easily cover everything in under 30 minutes. The small gift shop could be much more appealing and lacks variety, which is a missed opportunity considering the niche theme.
In summary, KattenKabinet is a unique museum with an endearing concept but doesn’t fully live up to its potential. It’s worth a brief visit for cat lovers, but a little investment in quality and presentation could...

Student ticket, €5, don’t need to enter on time. But buying ticket onsite gets a paper ticket with same price. Student ID is not strictly checked. My ISIC works. I think you can just walk in and ask for a ticket. It's not that popular and less likely to be full.
The museaum owner who is also the fonder currently lives above the museaum with his family. The building was bought by the owner when he walked by and saw a black sitting aside the window. The museaum fonded at 1990.
Not really big. 1.5 hour will be sufficient. There are various style of cat arts, from China, Japan to Europe, including paintings, comcerial posters and scupltures while the majority is european style. And there is a live cat which recieves more attention from the guests than the art collections, even the cat is just sleeping. Besides collection, the build is also authentic, decoration well preserved and maintained. There are even paints on the ceiling.
I bought a foldable bag of €6, which I think it's...
