Had a fun dinner at the Moeders (Mothers) restaurant at the corner of Rozengracht and Groenmarktkade recently. This is a neatly themed place covered with pictures of patrons and their mothers on the wall, serving up very good home cooked Dutch favourites. Opening hours for 5-10.30pm (M-F dinner only) and 12-10.30pm (Sat-Sun).
Importantly, Moeders is a very busy popular with locals and tourists so best to reserve in advance if you want to eat here. During the two times we've dined in recent years, the place has been completely full up and turning down walk-ins every few minutes throughout our meals.
As mentioned, part of the appeal of Moeders is the atmosphere. It is very casual, sort of cluttered and jam-packed tables. Lots of happy dinners with their friends and families, having a good time, enjoying really nice, hearty dishes. Service was pleasant, patient with guests, hard-working and timely throughout our meal.
Menu is rather small at Moeders. They focus on a handful of traditional Dutch orders and a few daily specialities and that is it. During our recent visit we had the Stamppot (Hotchpotch) which was a generous portion of flavourful mash and light gravy served with sausage, meatball and bacon. This was a quality and fulfilling Hotchpotch.
We also had the Hachée, a beef stew with onions served with boiled potatoes and red cabbage. The beef was stewed well, tender and very flavourful. This was just a really good order, something fans of stew will look forward to trying at Moeders. Wanted to order dessert but we were really full from the mains and had to take a pass this time around.
Overall, two for two for meals at Moeders. This is a fun place serving up really good traditional Dutch food. We'll glady return during future visits...
Read moreExcellent service from the moment we walked in, as it was impossible to book in advance on short notice due to popularity, we read about being able to get a walk in table, the first member of staff greeted us and apologised that a table was not available and that we would have to wait, not a problem and we were happy to wait. We were able to go to bar to order drinks, the bar man was very helpful with choosing a beer and was in good spirits, we took a seat outside and awaited our table. As we went quite early in the evening, we didn’t have to wait too long, around 15 minutes, service was very quick and after a few minutes of reviewing the menu we were able to order. This was ideal as we’d already eyed up the 20 euro sharing platter. We also noticed some bread with garlic dip on the table next to us which looked too good to resist, this was highly enjoyable. We also ordered the bittenballs, which I almost forgot about while writing this review, not because they weren’t delicious, more so as the main was exceptional. We were jokingly warned not to fill up too much on the bread as the main was quite a task, though something we wouldn’t have an issue with as seasoned foodies. Despite this challenge, we devoured 3 different types of potatoes, one of which included sauerkraut mash. I was unsure of this at first but it worked well with all the different flavours. The sausage and bacon were nice additions, as was the apple sauce and red cabbage, and the 2 types of beef stew were sensational. All around, this was a fabulous meal and a lovely setting, the staff were spot on from start to finish. Make sure you go here if you’re...
Read moreI’d heard this was one of the must-visit spots while staying in Amsterdam, so I booked a table online about a month in advance — and I’m glad I did! When we arrived, people were being advised that there was a long wait due to no availability. It’s a restaurant that specialises in Dutch “mother’s” home-style comfort food, which is a really lovely concept. The place is decorated with photos of guests’ mothers from over the years and I believe you can still bring a photo to have it added to the wall (correct me if I’m wrong!).
For the main course, we both had the Stamppot / Hotchpotch - mashed potatoes with vegetables, served with a sausage from butcher Louman, a meatball and bacon. You get to choose from sauerkraut, spinach, or carrots & onion as listed on the board on the wall. We went with spinach, and it was absolutely delicious! A little pot of gravy and some mustard were brought to the table as well, the whole dish was pure comfort food and I was very happy with my choice.
For dessert, my partner had the apple pie and I went for the stroopwafel ice cream, again both were really tasty. My partner enjoyed hers too, although she hadn’t expected it to be served cold but that may well be a Dutch tradition though, so it was more of a surprise than a complaint.
The only downside was the service. We waited quite a while for the dessert menu, and again afterward for our plates to be cleared and to ask for the bill, it must have been at least 20 minutes. We felt a bit forgotten, which unfortunately takes a star off the rating.
That said, it was still a lovely visit overall and a great opportunity to try some traditional...
