Waterkant translates into "waterside" and is another bar and dining establishment that falls into the "hidden in plain sight" category. Located at the rear of the Texaco garage and Q-Park Europarking on Marnixstraat, Waterkant is a waterside restaurant, bar and terrace with great views of the Nassaukade canal and the neighbouring docking station for canal cruise boats.
The terrace tends to get quite busy, particularly when the sun is shining,. DJS provide an eclectic mix of sounds creating a cool and chilled ambience. The place has a Caribbean feel. The bar stocks a good variety of draught and bottled beers, as well as wine, tropical fruit juices and sodas and mixed drinks and cocktails, available by the glass or in a 1,7 litre picher, ideal for sharing with a group of friends. Homemade lemonade, ginger beer and orgeade (an almond based drink which can be made with milk or water) are particularly refreshing. The terrace is self service. You have to order from one of the bars, making sure not to forget your table number.
Waterkant offers a breakfast and lunch menu valid until 4 pm and an all day menu until 10pm. The menus can be scanned for allergies. Food on offer is a mixture of Dutch, Mexican and predominately Surinamese snacks and dishes, with everything available in meat, fish and vegetarian versions. Mains consist of Saoto Soup - a delicious chicken soup with vermicelli, rice, bean sprouts, fried onions and boiled egg, Bami Chicken with fried onions, green beans, pickled vegetables and a side of tomato sambal, GadoGado vegetable salad with peanut sauce dressing and Tropical Salad with mango, cantaloupe, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, corn, red onion and sweet and sour sauce. Alternatively, there's a great choice of Surinamese buns, roti rolls and hamburgers. Due to Waterkant's popularity, reservations are not accepted.
For a great night out, consider combining with a visit to Maloe Melo, Amsterdam's oldest blues and rock cafe on Lijnbaansgracht, just a few minutes walk away, where leading Dutch musicians regularly have...
Read moreBeen living in the Netherlands for 2 years and my first experience with the Dutch bad customer service - as they say. The atmosphere is nice and lively. it is an expensive place but menu lists the prices. The problem is the staff and the manager, very rude! We ordered the vegetarian snacks platter, but it was fish and beef in the snacks, we complained to the staff and they were not ready to agree that it’s not vegetarian. The bar staff then goes and calls the manager - manager comes to the table and my friend says it’s fish to this, his words were “it’s your word against mine” then he asks us to read the menu and says that fish is listed in the vegetarian menu (huh?). We read the Dutch menu and no where it said fish (he didn’t think we could read and speak Dutch). To this he says he will refund the money only for the fish snacks. On further confrontation we got the money back for the whole platter but the manager and staff didn’t agree to the mess up, he kept on wanting to prove us wrong and insisted that there was no mistake in the order. Further, manager said that you should have come when you first ate the snack to show it was meat, like should I have taken out of my mouth to show you? there were beef loempias and he still kept on insisting - everything is separated in the kitchen and it’s not possible 😂. how do you convince a person if they are not even convinced with a proof? I mean, we could have been allergic! The point is, the experience was very condescending - he thought that we ate all the snacks and just want the money back, which was...
Read moreAmsterdam, but not Amsterdam. The ambience, the vibe and the food all make you feel like you may be in a vacation.
Location & Ambience: (5/5) Centrally located and easily accessible through almost all public transport. Right in a bus depot. It sits right up again a wide canal make for a nice separation for the usual views of Amsterdam. The vibe is incredible. The incredibly diverse groups of people make for a fun place to just sit and chill. The almost beach like vibe makes you feel that you may not be in the heart of Amsterdam. The music is also quite jumpy. Multiple seating both inside and out. Do come in early to grab a seat. And if you see a table open run and grab it. All ordering done on the table via the barcode for food. All drink to be placed at the bar inside and picked up.
Food and Drink: (5/5) An incredible selection of beers from all over. Beers from Suriname are even on offer. If you are out to drink, this is a good place. Not too expensive and yet, a broad selection. We had a couple starters a chicken and fish dish. But we’re good. The chicken was better and would recommend that. For the main course we had roti roll. This was really well made and very yummy. Thoroughly enjoyed the flavours. It is also extremely filling.
Summary: (5/5) For me the vibe and beer is what will keep me going back here. The food was good, but not the best. But then again, with all that good beer, not sure if that matters. Pick a sunny day and head down, a great way to vacation while still...
