Visiting New King on Zeedijk in the heart of Amsterdam’s Chinatown was a true culinary revelation. I used to think of Chinese cuisine as familiar and predictable, but the Sui Kau at New King completely transformed my perspective. For two days in a row, I returned to savor these extraordinary dumplings, and each time they left me just as amazed as the first.
The restaurant’s atmosphere is cozy and lively, with a bustle that feels like stepping into a family-run eatery in China. The decor is simple, but it only emphasizes that the food is the star here. The service is quick and friendly, despite the crowds during peak hours. The staff happily explain what makes their Sui Kau special, adding a warm touch to the experience.
The Sui Kau at New King is nothing short of phenomenal. I’d read reviews calling them “the best in the world,” and though I was skeptical, one bite silenced me. These large dumplings, with their thick yet tender and slightly chewy wrappers, encase a filling of the freshest shrimp and pork, perfectly balanced in flavor and texture. The shrimp taste as if they were just plucked from the sea, while the pork adds juiciness. Served in a clear, subtly sweet broth with delicate notes of sesame oil, the dish was a revelation. I couldn’t stop until I’d savored every last drop, and I found myself back the next day for the same experience.
These dumplings showed me that Chinese cuisine can be refined and sophisticated, where fresh ingredients and skilled preparation create a harmony of flavors and textures. The price for a portion of Sui Kau (around €8–10) is well worth it, given the quality and generous serving size. The only downside is the potential wait for a table during busy evenings, but the efficient reservation system ensures it’s manageable.
New King and their Sui Kau have redefined Chinese cuisine for me. It’s not just food—it’s an experience I want to relive again and again. If you’re in Amsterdam and craving a dish that will capture your heart and palate, the Sui Kau at New King is an...
Read moreNew King is a well known Cantonese cuisine restaurant. It is also a place where I used to visit often when I was a child visiting Amsterdam with my parents. However well known or not, I came here to try the status of this place right now in 2023. Funny part is I had lunch here with my girlfriend before she went to work, in the evening I had a appointment with my two aunts&niece, I didn’t know we were having dinner at New King aswell so for this review it is lunch and dinner.
Food: I love oysters, we saw oysters on the menu made in cantonese style. It arrived and jep! It is delicious. These are mega oysters, in the picture you can see it compared to my hand, and my hands aren’t that small. We ordered a Sui Kau soup with noodles for the both of us since I was having dinner in an hour. The Sui Kau was outstanding. Very nice broth and the dumplings were filled good. At the dinner I have ordered duck, ma po tofu and also the oysters. Simply great!
Service: Most of the time I have a prejudice on these places because the way they speak and do is just different from how you are. But since I’ve developed myself and I can distinguish rudeness and working hastly I can say, New King’s staff is very generous. The lady that served us was funny and worked quick, but most important she is kind. (Let’s say others can work fast aswell but it comes at a price, something with less service)
Atmosphere: The restaurant is always packed, it has been when I was a kid and it still is. But that will gives you that atmosphere and vibe you need to eat in these type of eating spots. The interior is oriental with a lot of red colors, the restaurant is well lit. Enough place and completion.
Conclusion: If you think of eating Chinese in Amsterdam, New King is a concept where you need to be. Their menu gives you enough choice. The place is central in the Asian neighbourhood and easily reached by foot from central station or the subway to...
Read moreWell, i was in Amsterdam visiting/working and a local friend and i were meeting up and she suggested this place to eat! I’m a foodie and love to eat anything tasty, one of my favorite cuisines is pan Asian.
My partner and I got to the restaurant before my friend arrived. We were supposed to meet around 5pm, but we got there around 445pm. When we came in we were greated and told we could sit anywhere upstairs or downstairs.
We decided to sit upstairs. By this time it was about 448p. My friend let me know she would be a little late but we were hungry and ready for some appetizers and drinks.
Even though we were ready to order the server literally bypassed us multiple times. She didn’t great us or come over to the table to ask could she help us. We were literally sitting there from 448-520p. By this time i was mad annoyed, not only were we being ignored completely by her, she never apologized which makes me believe that it was on purpose and this is not new behavior!!!! I haven’t been this angry in any place in ever!! I was so angry to receive this type of treatment I had to get up and go to the front and make a statement about the ignoring behavior and to ask whom else would be our server… they all acted surprised, especially her, but they know who she is and what she did!!!
I’m not sure if this treatment was because we are gay or black… just not sure… But, we’re paying costumers whom deserve the same treatment they give everyone else!!!! I’ve been to 20 countries and Amsterdam 7 times and i have never received that type of treatment in a restaurant or anywhere in Amsterdam! Her colleagues/family tried to makeup for her behavior with smiles and some sort of kindness, but it didn’t matter to me at that point i was boiling!!!! 🥵
If you are black, gay, foreign, or any “other” i would say find another restaurant to go to!!! The food wasn’t bad, but i couldn’t get into it after that type of treatment!...
