We had the Japanese summer high tea in Serre at Okura. A unique experience in Amsterdam, not the typical British-style high tea with sandwiches and a lot of sweets. Recommended if you are looking for a special experience.
Because it is summer, we got iced tea instead of the usual high tea. They were made by the restaurant (instead of using some commercial tea brand). In total we got three types of iced tea, which were all refreshing. They were slightly sweetened, not overpowering the tea but enough to enhance the original flavor of the tea.
The savory stuffs were served first. The beef tartare was one of the best I have ever tried. The shrimp was fresh and the tempura coating was crunchy, topped with perfect amount of sauce. Nothing to complain about.
Then for the sweets, we got 8 types of sweets. They were presented in a wooden box, some were inside the ‘drawers’. Presentation was simple but retained the luxurious impression. The highlights were: -Opera with pineapple, coconut, and almond: this is a unique combination that really works -Black sesame macaron: I was expecting more sweet taste but the black sesame flavor was not faint at all, I could taste it clearly. This choice of flavor for the macaron made the high tea more Japanese
Everything else was delicious and not too sweet (except for the mellow cake). Most of them were fruity and the fruits especially the strawberries were fresh and not too sour. After the high tea was finished we didn’t end up bloated nor stuffed in a bad way (which you usually get from eating too much sugary stuffs).
If there is one word to describe the high tea, it would be: balance, from the sugar and ingredients used in the ice teas, the sauces for the savory dishes, and the size and varieties of the sweets served.
Another plus point, the service was perfect. The waiters well explained the food they served. I requested for no cucumber which was taken seriously. They asked if everything was ok in a proper frequency (not...

The food was great, starting with high-quality oysters and delectable starters. Special thanks to the chef team for the oysters in batter, which were perfectly crispy and they paired well with super fresh oysters with cucumber taste. Another standout was the ceviche paired with grilled corn, an inspired combination that elevated the dish with its vibrant and smoky contrast. A unique touch was the branded Veuve Clicquot glasses, adding elegance and sophistication to the dining experience.
For the main course, the dishes were a creative interpretation of local cuisine. I particularly enjoyed the pheasant on sauerkraut, which was both flavorful and well-presented. Vegan options were thoughtfully included on the menu, catering to diverse dietary preferences. The desserts were perfectly balanced in sweetness, making them an excellent complement to tea or coffee.
The service was truly exceptional and deserves special mention. The attentive dining team replaced cutlery for every dish and thoughtfully provided sweets and a small bun to accompany the coffee. These little details elevated the overall experience and made it truly memorable.
Overall, this restaurant excels in every aspect, from the quality of the food to the ambiance and service. I highly recommend it for...
