To say it as first: This is one of the few places in Amsterdam, where you can just lay back or walk and without thinking because what makes this park in quiet the center so needed is the ban of bicycles. No Velo-terrorists. Let's be fair: Yes, Amsterdam is like all the Netherlands a paradise for bicyclists what does not include that they are really good at it. Just that they look adorable on it. And that of course makes every tourist believe, they can look as good as the locals and it must be so easy. Back to the Park which must probably be a gift to the city by one of its rich citizen. The way it looks today must be from two centuries ago when my assumption the the fountain is historicism. The landscaping, following the english allows one to take a nice walk around a little lake and hardly ever see the wall that separates the City with its asphalt from the green that makes it so natural . So natural, that also locals enjoy that quiet spot in town. Especially on a hot summerday laying on the lawn with as little clothes on as possible as the fountain in the duck-pond cooles the air and the skin a little bit. So the durch do not ride their bicyclein Sarphatipark and let instead for once their dogs run freely - But only on one side of the pond. The Dutch seem really like better Swiss to me. Because on the other side of the pond, Amsterdamerinnen and Amsterdamer lay almost naked on the lawn on a hot summer day and nobody feels embarrassed or behaves weird because of a little naked skin. So. everything seems wonderful. Why only 4 stars, not five? Well. first of all because I am not too much of a fan of wildlife. Otherwise I would book a safari and not a city trip. I have no problem with dogs running freely as long as they don't lick on me. But with certain animals I have my problems. I am not big of a fan of insects and I definitely feel uncomfortable in the presence of rats. And I don't know why the city lets them to built up such a population, maybe we were just sitting on the wrong bench at the wrong corner - but I have in my entire life not seen as many rats as during that half an hour sitting there in Amsterdam. That would be reason enough for more than one star minus. But there iks another reason and from my not always easy to follow logic, it is a raiser, not a lower for me personally. Because I have to tell you that you are not safe from bicycles in So when you almost get hit by a bicycle in Sarphatipark. Just be prepared not to fave a tall blond guy or a friendly curly haired girl which would both face you in sweetest dutch or cheesy english. They ride like devils and they have for sure no breaks or they never noticed it so far, only the little bicycle bell gets everybody's attention. The only people who cannot respect the local rules are tourists. Not all 19 millions, but enough to have some understanding for certain reactions on the streets. And still, I think Sarphatipark stands like a picture, a metaphor for the tolerance of the melting pot Amsterdam and all the different aspects a city of that size...

Read moreCame for a short jog (2 miles) in the morning since it was the closest park to my hostel. Seemed like a quiet place with many open green areas. Little calisthenics park section for various bodyweight exercises. Saw a lot of dog signs around and people with dogs, so it seems like more of a place for people to go on casual walks with their dogs or let them play with other pups.
One lap around the outer trail is a little less than 0.5 miles (0.8km). If you're looking for a longer run with constant changes in scenery, not the place to go since you'll be running in circles. Vondelpark handsdown would be the place for that, which is where my next jog will be!
Very beautiful fountain in the middle, looks like in the top it has a bust of maybe one of the past Kings, but not too sure. I think this place would be great for a casual stroll and conversations with friends for an...
