We drove to Gouda for the cheese fondue. Conclusion: not worth the ride, at least not this restaurant.
The waitress was rude. On the website, it's clearly stated that you can also drop by without reservation - we arrived and this girl pretended she is giving us a BIG favour (also after I told her the website says so) for giving us a table "it's otherwise not possible usually", but then "punished" us with a small table in between two packed tables with two big groups.. That were of course loud (not their fault). The whole restaurant was otherwise quite empty (they also have an upper floor, also empty).
We were then given this weird drinks menu with only expensive wine and cocktail.. The cheese fondue was just bad. The cheese apart, the potatoes were extremely hard, cold and undercooked.. Carrot also cold. It was just such an unpleasant dining experience that together left us a bad impression on Gouda..
Sorry but first, provide the right info on your website that corresponds to your services. Secondly, educate your employees. We are just ordinary polite customers, we don't need to feel punished and downgraded, we don't owe...
Read moreGouda is the city of cheese; what better way to enjoy cheese than to also enjoy the animal where it came from: the cow!
Koeien en Kaas is an amazing restaurant with a rustic vibe in the center of Gouda.
They have a large menu with of course steaks, but also cheese dishes, fish dishes and surprisingly even vegatarian dishes.
Although the restaurant is great and the food tastes amazing, it is a shame that they only serve 'mainstream' parts of the cow even though there is so much more to the rest of the animal: tail, head, neck, etc. It would be nice if 'Koeien en Kaas' would serve more of the 'koe' instead of only the main body. They surprisingly also do not have many options for cheese, other than tasting menus or fondue.
There are 2 dining halls, 1 on ground level and one on the first floor. The toilets are also on the first floor and only accessible by stairs, which means wheelchair users can not go to the...
Read moreThe food is very good, but we had a few minor problems. When we arrived we wanted to seat on the top floor which has a very nice vibe, but the waiter said it was too hot upstairs and that he recommended to stay downstairs. On my trip to the restroom I realized that the top floor was pretty much the same temperature as the ground floor, so we we're kind of bummed. Also, when we ordered the Gouda fondue, we made it pretty clear that we wanted a one person amount even though it would be shared with two people, just because we were planning to eat more stuff after. We were given (and charged for) a two person fondue which unfortunately half of it had to go to waste. There is no drink menu, only a wine menu, so if you want to drink non alcoholic drinks you'll have to play the guessing game with the waiter. Even though we didn't like these minor issues we really enjoyed the food so that's why it...
