Pannenkoekenhuis de Schaapsbel — Restaurant in Leiden

Over the years I've been to De Schaapsbel multiple times as it is one of my favourite places for pancakes. Particularly the combination of sweet and savoury flavours in one pancake is something I highly appreciate. Also their portions are large and reasonably priced making it a good place for a heavy lunch or dinner.

Than why just the 3 star review, if I keep returning? That mostly has to do with the staff. While they are always friendly, time and again I run into the problem that on busy days they seem understaffed as it takes some time and effort to get the attention of someone. Also not all staff is of the same level of professionality and/or manners. So while some are really nice and kind, others treat you like it's a burden to serve you. And just as a side note: the tables are located fairly close to each other and it is a place popular with families, often with children and/or pets. It's always good that people enjoy themselves, but my eardrums sometimes prefer to be located just a bit further from a screaming child and a dog looking for a treat under your and...

We had a lovely evening meal here. It was a Wednesday night and the place was quiet. The waitress was entirely charming: chatty, interested in us, good with recommendations about both the food and the area. The food was obviously not "Fine Dining", but it was not pretending to be. This place was the first time I tried Dutch pancakes and after that I fell in love with them. Their menu is diverse, they have some really nice savory + vegetarian options as well. We liked their special pancake which as far as I remember had bell pepper, onions, tomatoes and zucchini.
