What was supposed to be a nice culinarily experience at Bree33 in Leiden, turned out into one of the worst restaurant experiences of my life. We got completely ignored by the waitress. And, no the restaurant wasn’t busy, and she wasn’t preoccupied. She just stared at us standing in the door opening. Given the great references we read online, we decided to not walk out immediately, so we walked up to her and asked her if we could take please. This wasn’t possible, if we were only going to stay for a dessert. This statement was not elaborated or in anyway justified. It was absolutely unreasonable given the fact that it was already after 8, and the restaurant was almost empty. We were perplexed at this behavior and asked if we could stay if we ordered some beverages as well. The waitress took her sweet time to answer this, and made sure we were aware of her dissatisfaction with our request and presence. We were clearly not welcome and decided to leave. By the time we got to the door, she was at one of the two tables, and was making small talk with the other costumers, but she couldn’t bring it up to wish us a nice...
Read moreI call on Monday afternoon to see if there is availability. Yes, table for two, no problem, see you later.
Our coats are taken at the entrance and after a warm welcome, we sit down in this nice small restaurant. I guess it seats about 40 people max. The menu is good, 4 options per coarse and a day special is what I really like. No hassle going through numerous options.
The food is very tasteful, the portions are perfect for a four coarse meal and the wine is fine. Value for money is more than okay and combined with pleasant staff.
One thing though that I can do without is the question "Do you know our concept?". Dining is NOT a concept and there are lots of better options to bring across that three courses are for small eaters and you advice to take four. I dare the staff to come up with at least one better alternative for this...
Read morePerfect restaurant on many levels. A small interior and a somewhat rustic decor do not instantly reveal the magic of the place, but as time goes by and you're served one fantastic dish after the other, you realize it's just what a good restaurant should be - fantastic food, excellent pacing of the meal, knowledgeable and pleasant waiting staff and the right price of Eu33 for a 4-course meal. Mine started with the scallops, continued with the duck breast, then the lamb and for dessert I chose the lemon curd. All masterly done, beautifully presented and judiciously sized. Bistronomy...
