Le Fernand — Restaurant in Maastricht

DON’T TAKE THE CHEESE PLATTER Overall it’s an amazing restaurant, I really recommend sitting inside (or starting outside and then moving inside) and I also strongly recommend drinking wine, even the cheapest red wine is amazing. What is important to note is that the portions are quite small but this particularly applies to some plates that are literally a scam. I’ve been there two times and I strongly recommend the fries and the tournedos, if you take those and a glass of wine you can do an incredible dinner with 23/25 euros (per person). At the same time, I strongly don’t recommend taking the cheese platter, as it costed 15 euros and it was literally three small pieces of cheese (something like 2 cm x 4 cm) , a fourth of a baguette, a spoon of confiture and five grapes. It was a terrible delusion, because even if they were nice, it was a super small portion (especially considering the price). I didn’t take a picture but you really have to trust me on this one. We were very excited to try this restaurant after reading so many positive reviews. We arrived just after opening and were told there was only a four hightop available (despite there bring lots of empty tables when we arrived). It quickly became apparent they gave us the less favorable table as it was in the middle of the walkway and I ended up getting banged every time someone walked by. Our bad experience didn’t end there, when we asked for the wifi password to access the english menu online the waitress snatched my phone out of my hand, entered it and stormed off. Turns out she put in the wrong password and so I felt very uncomfortable asking again because she had been so rude. We finally got it and were able to order and then were promptly ignored the rest of our dinner. I understand waitstaff being frustrated with obnoxious foreigners but was truly confused why we were being treated so poorly- especially as we have never experienced this here in Maastricht and we have come many times. Went there for dinner. If you’re lucky, try to get a table outside for the best atmosphere ;) inside is nice too but they tend to play some French music (I am French) that sometimes does not so much fit the vibe 😅.

Food is very good; 4 out of 5 Entries: St Jacque scallops with pancetta 3 out of 5 (pancetta is excellent but the scallops not that much) snails are awesome 😋

Main dishes: tuna with little ratatouille is ok filet de boeuf 🥩 is very very good (I recommend)

The wines you can take in glass are nice but not excellent. I bet they have very good bottles but they were out of my budget 😅.

All in all very good experience we had a great time with great service. A bit more than 100€ for two people for a nice dinner.
