Van Buuren — Restaurant in Maastricht

Bad experience! During our brief day-trip from Germany to Maastricht, my friend and I had lunch at this restaurant today. Unfortunately, I must share my very disappointing experience.

I chose the Smokey Salmon, My first time to order it, so unfamiliar with its raw presentation. Upon receiving it, I kindly asked the waiter to either cook it slightly or pack it to go. To my surprise, he insisted that cooking would ruin the dish, emphasizing that I had ordered Smokey Salmon so IT IS THAT. Then he took the food and came back with it packed, without showing a single sympathetic word or any alternative suggestions or offering something else. it was not very friendly but still OK till then.

What followed was an uncomfortable situation where I heard the waiter whispering in Dutch with other colleagues and making jokes of me and what happened with . Very periodically, I noticed one staff looking back at me with a sneering face. It happened in several times in a row, and had made me feel so pissed .The entire experience was humiliating and embarrassing.

Later, as my friend were enjoying her Burger (which was quite good to be fair), I discreetly took out a small snack and my water bottle from my purse to have since I was both starving and so irritated by staring eyes of staff on me . Quickly, Another staff member, even less friendly than the first, asserted that outside food was not allowed. I pointed to my packed food, explaining that I had been paying for it, but were not able to eat that though. The response was a rather rude refusal.

I understand that being a waiter is challenging, and I appreciate the difficulties of the job. However, hospitality, friendliness, and a degree of flexibility are crucial for maintaining a positive reputation of such a restaurant with a nice atmosphere and location.Unfortunately, these aspects were definitely lacking in both individuals we encountered. People do not go to restaurant to just have food. Everyone deserve a respectful behavior. Despite having been regular customers whenever we visited Maastricht from Germany, this regrettable experience has led us to consider it...

Vorab, die zwei Sterne gibt es nur wegen der tollen Location!

Wir sind heute Morgen dort hinein gegangen, weil das Lokal von außen sehr einladent aussah und der bedienende Kellner auf den ersten Blick auch sehr freundlich aussah. Allerdings sollten wir gleich vom Gegenteil überzeugt werden.

Dieser junge Mann kam sofort an unseren Tisch. Ich fragte auf Englisch, ob sie auch eine deutsche oder englische Karte haben. Er antwortete uns direkt auf Deutsch und sichtlich genervt fragte er, was wir trinken wollten. Noch nicht einmal in die Karte geschaut bestellten wir völlig überrumpelt jeweils eine Flasche Wasser. Dann brachte er das Wasser und die deutsche Karte. Ich fragte freundlich, was er denn als typisches niederländisches Frühstück empfehlen könnte. Er öffnete die Karte und zeigte von oben nach unten auf die Frühstücksseite mit einem frechem Grinsen im Gesicht, ohne einen Ton zu sagen, drehte sich um und ging.

Erst dann sahen wir, dass im 10€ Frühstück ein Glas Orangensaft und ein Tee oder ein Kaffee usw. im Preis enthalten sind. Warum konnte er uns das nicht von Anfang an sagen? Wir bestellten das Frühstück und ein Pfefferminz Tee. Der kam etwa 5 Minuten später auf einem Tablet, welches an den Tischrand gestellt wurde. Wir durften uns dann selbst bedienen. Ich kenne das sonst so, dass die Tassen hingestellt werden und das Tablet abgeräumt wird. Auch das alles wieder ohne ein Ton.

In meiner Tasse war so wenig Pfefferminze, dass das ganze kaum danach schmeckte. Ich bat ihn um mehr Pfefferminze. Die kam auch ein paar Minuten später, auch ohne ein Ton. Ich wollte ihn schon fragen, ob es heute nicht sein Tag ist und ob er schlecht gelaunt ist oder er ein Problem mit deutschsprachige Gästen hat, dieses Gefühl hatte ich übrigens öfters in Holland, obwohl ich Italiener bin und meine Frau Polin. Da aber kaum einer dort polnisch oder italienisch spricht, versuchen wir es mit deutsch oder englisch.

Das Frühstück kam auf einem Teller. Darauf eine kleine runde Scheibe Brot mit etwas Rührei (ich schätze mal, es war genau ein Ei) etwas Tomate und ein paar Scheiben Champignons drunter gerührt und das ganze ungewürzt. Eine halbe Kiwi, ein etwa 6cm Stück Banane, eine kleine Butter, ein kleines Schälchen Marmelade, ein Croissant und ein kleines Schälchen mit Joghurt und etwas Müsli, nicht mehr als 100 – 120 gr.einen Löffel um das Müsli zu essen bekamen wir nicht, wir nahmen dann den aus dem Tee. Wir saßen direkt an der Treppe nach oben. Der Platz ist nicht zu empfehlen. Apropos irgndwann kam eine Mitarbeiterin von oben runter, die scheinbar gerade Ihren Dienst begonnen hat, mit einer Tupperschüssel und wahrscheinlich ihren Pausenbrote.

Die sehr nett aussehende junge Mitarbeiterin darf entweder die Lebensmittel dort nicht essen oder sie sind so schlecht, dass sie ihre eigenen mitbringen muss. Wie auch immer, es war seltsam das zu sehen.

Meiner Meinung nach, sollte ein solch tolles Lokal entweder freundlicheres, besser ausgebildetes Personal einstellen und seinem Koch empfehlen das Menü etwas besser zu würzen, wir können es so nicht empfehlen. So sauer war ich schon lange nicht mehr, deshalb gab es auch...

Really unimpressed with this restaurant. It took over an hour for us to get our food which itself pretty good after the long wait. I’m really disappointed as the staff was condescending to us. We ordered tap water along with a drink, appetizer, and two meals and our waiter told us normally the staff wouldn’t be happy with us ordering just tap water but luckily they were making enough money that night that it was okay (his literal words) It came off very condescending and like we weren’t spending enough at the restaurant. I felt like he was suggesting we couldn’t afford to eat there. If ordering tap water is an issue they could have charged us for a bottle of water but that was never suggested as an option we were just told it’s an issue to order tap water.
