ZanziBar — Restaurant in Middelburg

Food was decent but nothing special. My burger was alright but so tall you could neither eat it with your hand nor a fork or knife. Taste was mediocre, no special sauce, just ketchup. The beef was good and cooked well. However, for 21eur they should focus on quality over quantity at that point. Other dishes were good, can't say that was a problem. The tomatensoep and gamba salad were quite good as suggested by my family members.

Now, the reason for the low rating is the poor taste left in our mouths by the older blonde waiter who not only was highly passive aggressive but also quite rude when asked (yes twice) simply if another chair could be placed on the table which would slightly impede the foot traffic. The reason we asked is because their poor design of rain covers was letting it rain on one of our young family members. When told about that, she responded with I can't snap my fingers and have the rain turned on or off as if I suggested it. When I explained she did not need to answer with such an attitude as it is clear we are not asking for the rain to be stopped, she told me that I should not have asked such a question in the first place (laughing and putting her hands up as if she came up with the most brilliant argument). When other customers came by and left a mobility scooter in the way, she came by and asked them to move it and dealt with it nicely. Surprise, surprise, perhaps if we spoke Dutch, that would have helped our desperate cause. Alas, us buitenlanders are so horrible to deal with I guess. Perhaps she was having a bad day, but in all honesty she could take her attitude somewhere else. This is the service industry and a question was asked in a very calm and polite manner. If you can't handle that, then maybe consider spending less on facial improvements and more on an education to get out of the waiter's life.

As for the rest of the staff, they were very nice and kind. So, thank you to all the staff there apart from the one waiter who nearly made us walk away. Furthermore, the covers were so poorly designed that it would frequently pour from the middle into the walkway almost on the customers who were seated and even the waiters. Perhaps, you can't snap your fingers and fix all your problems even the ones caused by yourselves. Dit is typisch Nederlandse weer after all, it always rains. Some foresight might help.

As for atmosphere, this was something that was quite pleasant especially seated at the fire place. Nice, cozy, and warm....

Op zoek naar een leuke eetgelegenheid in Middelburg kwamen we eerst bij een andere gelegenheid maar toen de vol bleek te zijn stapten wij metende aarzeling binnen bij Zanzi bar. Aarzeling omdat het terras gevuld was met jongeren en wij, pensionados niet direct daar tussen passen. De ontvangst was hartelijk en we konden een tafel uitzoeken. Vanwege het aangename weer hadden we binnen volop keuze. Wat direct opviel was de prachtige entourage, Afrikaans zonder te overweldigen. Gewoon warm en sfeervol. De muziek was goed en had een prima geluidsniveau. Na de drankjes werd de kaart gebracht en wat meteen opviel was de enorme verscheidenheid in de keuzemogelijkheden. Van eenvoudig soepje naar bijzonder knolookbrood, naar gambas etc. De hoofdgerechten van biefstuk, stoofpotje naar curry en verder naar een burger, vis of vegetarisch. Zelden zie je ergens zo'n gevarieerde kaart. Ook prijstechnisch gezien was alles op een keurig niveau, zelfs iets lager dan gemiddeld. De aangename service nam onze bestelling op variërend van breekbrood met aïoli en tapenade naar gambas in lookolie. De hoofdgerechten waren gebakken mosselen, gambas, 200 grams steak en een Aziatische bowl met beefpuntjes. Wat hebben wij genoten, elk gerecht was perfect opgediend en met liefde en zorg gemaakt, elk gerecht had z'n eigen smaken en de hoeveelheden waren prima. Daarbij zeer smakelijk krokante en bruine friet. Zowel de bediening als de kok hadden tijd voor een praatje en dat completeerde een bijzonder mooie beleving in deze zaak. De vier sterren voor de sfeer komt omdat het binnen erg rustig was. Buiten op het terras was het daarentegen afgeladen vol. Al met al een absolute aanrader als je in Middelburg bent. Terras...

This place is very very very expensive. They put there food very tricky on the menu card. We ordered a appetizer for 4 persons and paid more then 60 euro for it! Unbelievable. On the menu is written down then that the appetizer is calculated per person. Very tricky, so watch out with that! Read the menu good and read the “small letters”.
