Read moreAs a true blood Indian, extremely loyal to the country’s multidimensional cuisine and having travelled extensively around the world on my diplomatic status and otherwise, I am always longing to eat at Indian restaurants serving authentic cuisine in foreign lands, often leading to disappointing experiences as many such restaurants fall to the trap of localising Indian cuisine, leading to neither here nor there kind of taste experience.
Having said that, Krishna Vilas in Utrecht begs to be refreshingly different. To start with, it serves a fusion of delicious North Indian and South Indian cuisine to choose from which itself is very unique even to restaurants in Indian cities.
As a resident of Utrecht since the last three years, I am a regular at Krishna Vilas since it’s inception and have tried almost every item on their extensive menu.
If you are new to Indian cuisine and are looking for a feel of complete full meal experience with a single dish on their menu, you should try their North Indian and South Indian Thalis (Thali means a ‘meal platter’). They come with varieties of freshly made Indian curries and gravies with the right amount of spice and heat quotient alongside crispy Indian bread like Roti, Naan or Puri coupled with an Indian sweet dish.
If you are looking for the typical ‘Indian tiffin’ (small portion meals) you should try from their yummy varieties of Idly, Vada and Dosas (Indian pan cakes) which are crispy and come with an accompaniment of three varieties of chutney (gravy dips) and sambar (lentil soup). They have a wonderful variety of flavoured rice items, each unique to vast regions of India. The hospitable, ever smiling and efficient restaurant staff will guide you in choosing dishes suiting your taste buds.
Two typical Indian beverages which are must to try in Krishna Vilas are their ‘Masala Chai’ and ‘Mango Lassi’.
Kudos to Mr and Mrs Sharavanan, the founders of this food chain.
The bottom line is ‘it’s highly enriching to eat drink and make...
Read moreMy original rating was 5 stars, but now I wish I could give zero stars. Had the worst experience ever at any restaurant ever! We had a reservation for 6:30, and as we were seated, we were told that we would have to vacate the table at 8:15, since they needed it for another reservation. We thought that was a very strange request, but we said we'd be done by then anyway, if the food comes on time. This all happened before we were even given any menus. Anyway, we thought the menus would be coming, but even after 15 minutes, there was no sign of any menus. We had to ask someone for the menu. The same story continued with no one coming to take our order. Finally we managed to place our order around 7:20, and of course it then takes time for the food to arrive. But then what happened next is literally the most ridiculous thing ever! At 8:15, we were told to vacate the table and leave WHILE WE WERE STILL IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR DINNER! This was just madness! We were not able to believe what was happening. We were literally forced to leave in the middle of our dinner! When we demanded to speak to the manager, we were told that the manager is on vacation, and we were promptly given the restaurant card and asked to call them later when the manager would be available, but for now, we would have to leave the restaurant, even though we were not done with our dinner. I'm still in shock of how we were misbehaved with and humiliated. Cannot even describe this as poor service. I just have no words.
All in all we went to this restaurant with a reservation, to pay them to get humiliated. Never again am I coming here ever again. Have some shame and learn how to treat other human beings...
