We have been coming to Hokkaido for many years and even though we have moved all the way out to little Waiuku, we still come in just for Hokkaido every now and then. It is our favourite Japanese restaurant in all of Auckland. I don't understand when previous reviewers say the portions are small... The style of Japanese is to eat many smaller dishes and the amounts per dish are very substantial compared to many other Auckland Japanese restaurants we have been to. We love their attention to the taste of the food and presentation, fresh oysters and oysters with mayo and cheese are a must for any seafood lover!!! We are biiig eaters and don't mess around when we are out, so the fast service is sublime 👌 The staff are always so friendly, I noticed you have stopped yelling out thankyou in Japanese when we leave though and we do miss this! (I don't know how to spell in Japanese sorry 😂) thankyou Hokkaido for many delicious, fun nights with my partner over the...
Read moreHad a pretty bad experience with food. My husband is now sick and we are pretty sure it was the deep fried chicken karage. Tempura vegetables were not cooked properly. Cheese and prawn dumplings were cut in half, dried and looked empty inside. So there was just 4(?) dumplings cut in 8 halves with couple of cabbage leaves. One dish that was not as bad as the rest was the crab salad. The drinks we ordered were just as bad. Sparkling sake is sweet like a condiment syrup, and I don't know how they managed it, but my husband got almost flat bottled beer. We had to ask for water 3 times until we got some, and they brought two tiny cups instead of a bottle. Pretty sure my husband has a food poisoning from that chicken, I had none of the deep fried food- I didn't like it straight away. We had only usual home made food beside the dinner at Hokkaido, so chances he got food poisoning from eating something else are pretty slim. We will not go there again. Place...
Read moreI lived in Japan for 4 years and came here with my three half-Japanese teens. We had eaten here many times when it was under Japanese ownership and loved it. Fast forward 4 years since our last visit and OMG, the quality has plummeted and this restaurant is now completely inauthentic. The rice was dry and chewy - NO excuse for this with a rice cooker - and way too slow to arrive (maybe they were reheating it from yesterday's leftovers?). Gyoza was deep fried 😮, tasted more like a bad sausage roll (no cabbage or spring onion taste to it at all), and was served with sweet chilli sauce?? 😱 Miso soup was tasteless and had only a few scraps of wakame in it. Chicken teriyaki was ok. Agedashi tofu and egg nigiri lacked flavour. Tongue was ok but came served with tare (usually a Japanese restaurant would default to the standard salt and lemon flavor, or offer either option). On the upside, the restaurant ambiance and layout is nice. We won't be...
