Very rude lady on the phone, but good food. I called them to order chips, hoki and oysters in advance as I was on my way to their shop. I inquired about what the best deal with me. I also requested for a moderate amount of salting with my order. She grew impatient very quickly and after I had decided on my order and asked her how much my order would cost, she refused to calculate the cost of my order as she didn't want to "waste [her] time" and abruptly hung up on me. It was very rude of her to consider talking to a customer a waste of time, especially considering the fact that I was making a large orderâthat she should want for the sake of her business. When I got to the shop, the man at the counter (who I assume is her husband) told me things were okay, and I told him I was confused as to why she was so impatient. It then turned out she didn't even bother to inform him about the order details, let alone begin making my order. I had to go through each of the items I wanted to order with him again. I was willing to patiently wait a while for my order to be made, but what disappointed me was the attitude that the lady on the phone showed me and that she did not actually serve me by passing on my phone order details. I had already ordered from their Fish & Chip Shop several times and I am by no means a 'time-waster'.
I understand that they may be busy, but that is still no excuse for them to talk to me that way and so abruptly hang up on a legitimate business inquiry. Furthermore, she should still have passed on my order details to him even if they couldn't start making the food right away, as I should expect that if I order through the phone and she had not told me she was not going to pass on my order. She did suggest to me, during the phone conversation, to come order in person, but I had told her I had made up my mind already and I listed to her everything I wanted. She did not make any indication during the call that she was refusing to take my phone order. If she was so insistent on getting me to order in person, she should have tole me that that was the only way I could order and made it clear that she would not take my order through the phone. Instead she did not do anything material about my order.
On the food, the fish was crispy and nice. The chips and oysters were also of good taste. Thus, I have not given them a 1-star rating out...
Read moreSomeone once told me that New Zealanders pound down 120,000 tonnes of chips annually. That sounds like a lot and I salute the hardworking spud growers of the mighty 'kohe and other breadbaskets (chip baskets?) of NZ for their efforts in keeping our fat fryers hissing and popping. Then I do some math and realise I must be doing near on a tonne of chips a year all by myself. This brings me to the venerable TFCS (only OGs like me can abbreviate this establishment). I haven't made my way down to the burger section of their menu yet but the chips alone are enough to keep me coming back - just the right balance of crunch and softness and fresh oil zing (none of that nasty stale oil aftertaste). The battered fish is a thing of beauty (almost as perfect as my aunty's beer batter) ensconcing the fish inside in a crispy embrace without suffocating it. I know its considered déclassé by some (but come on we're talking fish and chips now) but I do have a thing for their potato fritters as well. Now what are you waiting for - go and get to work on that chip tonnage of...

Will rate each individually
Hoki Fish (was confirmed fresh on phonecall not frozen) Worst fish ive eaten in my life. The fish turned to paste when put hand into it and it was slimy. I was told it was caught fresh but as someone who has eaten plenty of freshly caught fish in my life that definitely was not fresh nowhere near it. Not even sure it was hoki to be honest.
Donut- ok nothing amazing but probably the best of the lot
Squid Rings - below average
Wedges - average
Banana fritter - average.
I won't be going back again. Very average food at above average prices. It's a real shame because was quite good a couple years ago but now the quality just...
