Village Cafe — Restaurant in Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community

As you can tell from all the photos, we go to Village Café a LOT! 😅 The staff are so incredibly lovely & make the most delicious coffee & food. My partner & I work a lot and would go here before work many mornings or even meet up on lunch breaks when we could. The girls were all so lovely & remembered our orders very quickly. We felt like part of their ‘village’ & it was so so lovely. The atmosphere is quaint & cozy & reminded us of Parisian cafés we’ve seen on our travels. Right from the moment I walked in a didn’t feel welcome, the lady who served me wasn’t friendly nor engaging. I ordered creamy mushrooms with poached eggs. As another reviewer has mentioned the mushrooms were not creamy at all, no cream sauce, just mushrooms, there was spinach all over my plate which it doesn’t mention on the menu and I don’t like, and the eggs, well they were some of the worst poached eggs I’ve seen, I can poached eggs perfectly and I’m not a chef, my guess was they weren’t fresh as they were falling apart and not held together at all. Witness today of an elderly lady and grandmother being abused by a staff member for putting a hand on the outside of the food cabinet. Lady seemed to need to steady herself and had a limp. I cannot see why this was such a problem the cabinet was very sturdy. Seems the Cafe manager has major issues about possible finger prints. Yelling and screaming from staff member could be heard right out in the courtyard by all of us dining. I found this all to be so unprofessional and literally customer abuse.
