131 Eatery Methven — Restaurant in Canterbury

We stopped over in Methven for the first time in years with friends. One was keen to return to this cafe as he recalled the breakfasts were a favourite of his. We weren't disappointed & greatly enjoyed our meals here, choosing the following: Opuke Full Breakfast, Pancakes with Banana & Maple Syrup, Eggs Benne with Bacon & French Toast. Not only were all our plates empty, the Supreme coffee was so smooth, we stayed for a second Flat White, which explains why there was a steady flow of coffee lovers stopping by for a takeaway cup too.

The staff were lovely, welcoming, chatty & flexible enough to switch ingredients or options with any meal on the menu.

Our fellow customers covered every demographic & age group, including families with babies & young kids. Whilst this is no surprise given that the menu offers something to suit everyone, I think it's also due in part to the convivial atmosphere, warm fire & wonderfully friendly service... We arrived at this café just before 2 pm. The barista was friendly and welcoming.

We ordered two flat whites. which were nicely presented and tasted good.

The cabinet selection of food was poor and the kitchen was already closed.

We ordered a curry vegan vegetable filo and a beetroot quiche which were served without side-salads or condiments. When we asked for some sauce the barista apologised and readily gave us some.

My wife said that the quiche was the worst she had ever tasted; the feta was rubbery and the beetroot chewy. She felt ill after eating it.

The filo was fine but bland without a side-salad or relish.

It is a pity that Café 131 let itself down. We hope that the owners of the café can learn from this review and improve. This is a highly-rated café. In letting itself down, it did not endear...

Staff and associated design contractor onsite were extremely rude to me, while I am currently confined to a wheelchair. They refused to have a civil conversation with me and kept talking over me loudly and victim blaming. Haven't had such a horrible customer service experience since coming to NZ 8 years ago. After staff threatened to eject me, rather than having a discussion with me, the owner showed up and smoothed things out just enough to convince me to leave. I am appalled at the way I was treated. This issue has not been solved satisfactorily.

I highly recommend you spend your money somewhere they don't treat people on the sidewalk as disposable...
