The pot of pork stew we ordered to share between 3 people was $32. We asked if that would be enough for us three and the waitress said yes. Turns out, the size of this stew to “share” is the size of your ordinary serving size stew for one person at any other respectable Korean restaurant in Chch (Gang Nam, Station, Eden Elley). It was definitely not enough for three people. The taste was unbalanced (too salty, too spicy). I could have made this at home.

When the stew arrived, we didn’t get any additional bowls to scoop it into. I don’t think they know how to run a Korean restaurant. There was no complimentary rice or side dishes either. Seriously, I wonder how will they compete with the other Korean restaurants in Chch?

The funny thing was when we asked the waitress for additional rice bowls for the stew, she got us three smaller soup bowls and said “we are short on rice bowls”. This was 5.30pm on a Saturday and we were the only ones at the restaurant. How can they start dinner service already running out of rice bowls?

The site is dark and tacky. It’s got a creepy vibe to it. It’s like a restaurant but also a bar/club?? None of the waitresses were actually Korean and the menu had no Korean words on it so I’m pretty sure actual Koreans don’t go to this place since it’s a rip off in terms of value, and mediocre at best in terms of taste. Also, they need to learn how to properly chop up spring onions.

I agree with the other 1 star comment. It’s all true. Go check it out for yourself if you believe the 4.6 rating.

I give them 6 months before they run out of steam and their business is put on the HC liquidation list. I wouldn’t even bother with this place.

Better places in Chch that have complementary rice and side dishes and BETTER quality food that you can actually call Korean - Gang Nam, Korea House, the Station, Eden Alley, and even TJ’s if...

Had the worst ever experience and SPOILED MY WIFE'S BIRTHDAY DINNER. I booked with First Table and experienced the worst service from a restaurant Arrived early to restaurant and one staff welcomed and asked whether we would like to sit at the top where there was all lights and we said yes. Suddenly one other staff interrupted and told we were not allowed to sit at the top part of the restaurant. We grabbed a seat and had looked on all guidelines of the restaurant and asked them again there is no guidelines that we can't sit at the top part of the restaurant and also told that it's my wife's birthday dinner and wanted to give her something special over there. They declined and told there was a minimum spend and didn't even bother to ask whether we would buy above the minimum spend. We felt very discriminated and felt racist towards our skin color. My wife was really sad and we left the restaurant without having food as we felt very discriminated. Thank you so much for RUINING MY...

I came in with my wife on Saturday night, Food was good rice was a bit cold.. but did end up enjoying the food. although, there was only one young blonde girl working so service was a bit behind. We understand hospitality though so just ignored that but when she came to take our order I felt as she was quite rude towards us for no reason and almost forcing us to be quick with ordering even though we were the ones waiting for service. I understand that she might have been stressed but there is no need to take it out on anyone especially not customers. Last time we came about 3 weeks ago there was a different young girl working was a bit behind in service too but she was very lovely made us feel very welcome, was good with recommendations and talking to us...

Stir fried beef brisket tasted quite fusion, more like Chinese stir fry than Korean. The portion of the army stew was very small for 30+nzd. Pancake was equally small as well and costed 14nzd, the texture of the prawns and pancake were slimy and it gave us a weird after taste, as if it wasn’t fully cooked. However, we would highly recommend the soy and volcano fried chicken, however the price were a bit steep at 35nzd. Not to mention that some of the chopsticks were mouldy. Upon looking closely, we found the logo of the previous restaurant before Won Pocha on the chopsticks… Overall I feel that we could get similar food elsewhere with a lower price.

A Hidden Gem Worth Discovering! The Won Korean Restaurant is an absolute gem tucked away where you'd least expect it. The meals are incredibly tasty, generously portioned, and surprisingly inexpensive. You leave full, happy, and already planning your next visit. What sets this place apart, though, is the staff. You can tell they genuinely love what they do. The service is warm, attentive, and second to none. It’s rare to find a spot that nails both flavour and hospitality, but The Won delivers on every level. Highly recommend for anyone looking for delicious Korean food with heart.
