Went there on a Friday evening for dinner and it was packed. Lovely appealing exterior stone and wooden building - made to look like a barn or lodge. Seemed to be the busiest place in Cromwell that night with all the locals. Great vibe. Felt like a real small town, farming, southerners pub. Loved all the hunting type, rustic wooden interior design. Couldn't get a table initially so sat on lovely Chesterfield leather couches until a table became free. Bit disappointed that there was no table service when ordering our food. We had to go up to the bar to order. Staff seemed friendly. Had the fried chicken with siracha mayo as a starter which was incredible. So crispy and tasty! Then had the Angus rib-eye steak with winter veg and garlic butter - very good and decent sized portions too. I'd definitely go back there. The other meals on the menu looked great too.

Ordered the garlic bread, it came out quickly and was very good, would get again. The mains took quite some time, I ordered the Caesar salad, the chicken was great but there was a lot, and a lot of bacon. Good flavors but if you are after a light meal don't get this. Wasn't cos lettuce. My dad got the beef burger, it had two patties, they lacked flavour and had a large piece of gristle in the middle. The staff were friendly and the decor was nice. Would come again but probably just for a beer

WARNING !! This isnt going to be good... I have eaten a few 5 Stags across the South Island and by far this is the worst ever.... I had the steak... was mediocre and veg was cold and tasteless. My friends had Pizzas and neither of them ate any more than a quater as it looked anything but appertising and one of them looked ( and tasted ) terrible. We also had a Corn on the Cob as a starter and it was a dried out soppy cold effort. So from me a 1 star, and sorry to say we wont be back

Skip this place and head for The Stoaker Room - that place has been really good in our experience. 5 Stags, on the other hand is utterly disappointing at all levels. We ordered fish and chips before tables around us arrived. After several surrounding tables ordered, got their food, and left we followed up on our order.Told it would be out shortly so ordered a pint to cheer up the experience - pint was totally flat. Was also made to feel I was putting them off my asking?!?... Waited another 20 mins and no food. Followed up again and told it would be out shortly. Since following up the first time, new tables had arrived, ordered, and were eating. Finally got our fish and chips after a 1.5 hour wait and the fish had been double fried; so it was a bit burnt and hard to eat. Fries were stale. Salad had wilted from the heat of the kitchen. No offer for a comp’ed or discounted meal. We got a curt “Im sorry”. $36 for a 1.5 hour wait for twice fried food. I’d imagine our order had been forgotten in some corner of the kitchen for an hour then, instead of making fresh, they just...

Have been going for meals every year with my family and I come here for holidays over the last 10years. Went for tea on Friday night, it was terrible from the start they didn’t have our booking which had been made on the Wednesday. Managed to get our table sorted, after making our order which our server (apparently the manager)clearly did not care, didn’t even look like he listening to the order. Half of our table got their order and their chips were cold. After waiting 10-20mins and asking our server when the rest of the table orders it was at least 40mins before the rest of the orders came out and it was wrong and cold. Chicken was cold. Had to ask 4 times to get sauce that was meant to be with the chicken and they still didn’t bring out the right sauce. The server didn’t even apologise once during the whole time we had been taking to get our meals, the server didn’t even look or say a word to us when paying for our meal. Very disappointed in the service and meal will not be going back. Such a shame for my family and I after supporting this business for...

This was my second experience eating at the five Stags. Two years ago it wasn't good and I was silly enough to go back again thinking things might have improved. The menu was almost identical and once again NO Venison on the Menu. Why call yourselves Five stags? We ordered the fish and both my mother and I were highly disappointed. The batter was disgusting, thick and cooked to a hard crust, which once broken through revealed a tasteless overcooked piece of fish. Neither of us could finish our meal. To our surprise the people on the next table had a pizza served to them. When I commented that we never saw that on the menu, I was told that there was another bar menu that we were not offered. When I went to pay and complained about the food, I got offered a $5 discount, whippee, only the find later that I had been charged an extra $8 surcharge because it was a public holiday. I would not recommend eating in...
