The Devonport Public House — Restaurant in Devonport-Takapuna

Giving 4 stars, but that's really only due to the friendly staff. They were great. However, the Margarita pizza was a sad affair. It was soggy, lacking flavour and swamped in cheese. Sadly, my orange juice was mostly ice and that makes for a very expensive drink. I had the salt and pepper prawns, and they were actually delicious. At least they were until I unwittingly chewed one of the two whole chillis that were left in the meal Yes, whole, complete chillis, buried in the salad which came with the prawns. Suffice to say, my tounge is still tender over 24 hours later. I can only imagine that the chillis were used to add spice to the prawns and that the chef simply neglected to remove them before serving. It wasn't even vaguely funny and I wish I hadn't paid for the meal. I can only suggest that if you order this dish, look out for these incredibly hot little surprises. It was like watching Fawlty Towers .. Clearly there was a staffing issue as there were two young boys helping out - about 9 and 10 year olds . They did their best. The two main ladies were clearly overwhelmed , but there was no structure and their frustration boiled over to a few customers and they were a bit snippy and it made it a little unpleasant . They got our drink orders wrong , never came back to take our food order so we went to the bar .. when I asked about removing onion from a Burger I was asked to take it out myself Or order something else - putting through the order and asking for no onion was clearly too hard . Another table ordered food and it was forgotten . Our burgers arrived , the chicken burger was revolting - the Pattie was very strange .. Was approached by a staff member on the side of the road. The whole shop smelt like it has been closed up for a long time - super musty! We ordered, we had to ask for a fork to eat. We ordered a frappe which turned out to be a milkshake made with hot chocolate - what we wanted - a frappe- wasn’t what the lady wanted to give us - disappointing. The man who processed our payment didn’t know how to use the system, snatched the money out of our hand before he even processed it, and when asking for a receipt they processed it as alcoholic drinks.
