Devonport is situated on the North Shore precinct of the Auckland city and is one of the oldest European settlements in Auckland. A very picturesque port amazingly beautiful on sunny days, this small town is the base for many ferries that sail to many small islands in the Hauraki Gulf. Also, this is where the Royal New Zealand Navy or the main naval base of New Zealand is located.
It was settled by Europeans in 1840. However, Maoris were the original settlers in the mid-14th century when the landing of the Tainui waka happened too. The last remaining Māori settlement was in North Head, and Ngapuhi chief, Patuone (1764-1872), is buried on the slopes of Mount Victoria (Takarunga), an iconic dormant volcano in Devonport.
It was initially called Flagstaff because of the flagstaff raised on nearby Mount Victoria. The mangrove swamp that stretched from Narrow Neck to Ngataringa Bay was filled in to form a racecourse in the late 19th century, now turned into a golf course. A new road was built along the western edge of the racecourse allowing more direct travel to the north and now called Lake Road.
