I have always wanted to try this place but it was always full. I was happy when we were able to get a table for dinner without having to book. The menu is fairly basic but they do have a range of Cantonese style items on the menu. I think we were served by the owner and they were really personable and it was quite enjoyable interacting with them. The food here is quite nice. We grabbed a few items to share. The prawn fried noodle was nice, particularly the sauce since it was the deep fried noodle topped with the meat. The Fujian fried rice was also nice but it was a bit different to the one I am used to since it didn't have tofu and it was a bit on the dark side. The combination claypot and the salt and pepper pork chop was also really good, as were the fried fishballs. I did notice they had kaya toast so we got some for dessert and it went down nicely. It is easy to see why they are so busy, good food and service. They were also quite efficient in clearing the empty tables so even if they are busy you might just need to wait a bit to...
Read moreThe owner is absolutely massive. She was so big that when she tried to serve me food, she banged into all the tables, slipped on the floor and gave me third degree burns because she spilt the noodles on me. I could even feel the ground rumble when she fell the sound she made from slipping woke me up due to it being so loud and the food service being so long. Also, she kept giving me dirty looks like the nasty stains that covered her free second hand shirt. I could tell she took a bite out of my food before serving because her mouth was dripping wet from the soup and the portion left was tiny. The noodles were soggy, cold and broth was extremely bland. All the owner did was sit around at the front and blab her fat mouth at us to leave although we were only there for an hour. Overall, the experience at hungry head was disappointing. The food lacked flavour and authenticity, tasting like it had been sitting...
Read moreThis restaurant reminds me of my "good times" visiting Hong Kong. Food is good, their service is the most authentic part of how it is done back in Hong Kong.
I ordered Congee, 10 mins later waitress come back and tell me "we dont have congee tonight" then walk away without asking what I would like to order instead.
There is always a 50cent extra charge on the bill so I ask whether it is a charge for tea? The lady at the counter, who looks like the owner of the restaurant, look at me and throw the order docket on the counter and say, "check for yourself". Isn't this classic? Love it!
I totally understand if they charge for tea, as it is how a lot of restaurants would do in Hong Kong. In fact a lot of yum char restaurants in New Zealand charge for tea as well. So I dont know why she couldnt just...
