Bánh Mi Vietnamese Street Food — Restaurant in Invercargill City

A dining disaster from the start. Within a couple of minutes sitting down we were asked to order - I hadn’t even had a chance to read the menu. Instead of giving more time the waitress stood at our table waiting to hurry me along. I felt very intimidated so panic ordered the steak. Huge mistake. The two others I was dining with received their meals 15 minutes before I did, so they were almost finished as I sat and watched. I couldn’t possibly call what I had steak. Baked gumboot would be a better description. The texture was not like a piece of steak at all and it was visibly dry. The salad it comes with was grated carrot and a pile of coriander. Considering the cost ($44) I advised the staff that I was unable to eat it, and due to time restraints before going to the movies not to worry about replacing it. The chef came out and I further explained myself. She remarked I’d asked for medium rare - I was never asked how I wanted it cooked but that would not have made a difference. If you’re going to charge $44 for steak, it better be a bloody nice one. Myself and my partner got two banh mi for lunch and they were terrible. I got the 5 spice pulled pork that had fatty, slimy meat in it, with very little flavour, even with the inclusion of the pate and other ingredients. My partner ordered the chicken which was large chunks of breaded chicken, again, with no flavour.

All of the recipes for the rolls were very non-traditional, but the addition of aioli to the rolls is a crime against Viet food. I'm not sure who they're catering for, but they need to rethink their signature food if they want people to come back. My partner also explicitly asked for the aioli to be removed, but had it doused on her roll anyway.

The full sized rolls were $26 each, which was hugely overpriced for what you got. Can't comment on any of the other dishes, but we won't be going back after this disappointment.

I don't like to eat in restaurants so I order takeaway but honestly the fried spring rolls ARE TO DIE FOR!!!! I could happily live off them!!! The Pork Bahn Mi and the kebabs are just incredible!!! The flavour packed meals here should definitely be at the top of your list to try!!! The staff are always amazingly friendly and they're super polite with everyone dining too! If I was comfortable eating around others, Bahn Mi would be tippy top of my list!! I love the atmosphere and the general vibe of the place!
