The Zookeeper's Son — Restaurant in Maungakiekie-Tāmaki

I had my 21st birthday party in the Rooftop Garden Terrace. This venue is beautiful and spacious, and the roof is fully retractable, which was perfect for the warm summer evening that my event was held on!

From start to finish, the team at The Zookeeper’s Son provided outstanding service. Preeti was instrumental in planning the event - promptly and patiently answering numerous emails and phone calls. We came by earlier in the day to set up decorations and the staff kindly checked up on us regularly. Throughout the night, food platters were brought out on time and were very well presented. Everything was absolutely delicious (my guests complimented the food during the party and the following weeks too!). I appreciate that they catered to all dietary requirements and provided various vegan options! Benjamin and Catherine were so friendly and delivered exceptional all-around service, managing the bar and ensuring that everything was running smoothly, so I didn’t need to worry about a thing!

The ONEHUNGA ZOOKEEPERS SON deserves 0 stars the experience we had there was horrible we had hired out a floor for a function the staff kept harassing us telling us we weren’t allowed to play any music they knew it was a function we then asked can you guys play any music they said NO we hired out one of the floors only to have random members of the public using The area we hired out.The manager (Lisa Ryan)had told us that prior to booking this floor no members of the public would have access to this floor which was a lie. The staff were happy to take our money but didn’t want to help with anything. We had a massive group so if it wasn’t for us they wouldn’t have made any money that night.The drinks menu was very limited they kept telling our guests that they couldn’t make certain drinks because they didn’t have any ingredients in stock even knowing that we had booked well in advance you’d think they would have made sure they had everything stocked up. The staff made our guests feel so uncomfortable if any advice is given to this place is work on your customer service that could go a long way!!! Totally waste of money this place Would never...

I was really excited to spend my 21st here with my friends but was unfortunately really let down. We had booked in advance, and When we ordered drinks, for a table of 12, they took around half an hour to be completed. From placing our food order to receiving our food, we waited 50 minutes. I never received my meal until I asked for it (the steak). We were told it was because of a backlog, but the chef had stopped cooking and our server went up and placed the order with the chef. I proceeded to wait another 15 minutes for my medium-rare steak. When it arrived, the char on the outside was black, which was to be expected, however, the steak was not charred, it was burnt. Each bite was very bitter, once I cut into it, it was blue on the inside. The amount of blood that was seeping out was dying the chips surrounding red. When we asked about it, the server offered to take it back and make a new one, however at this point all of my friends had long finished their meals, as it had been around two hours after we had ordered the food.
