Discovering the culinary wonders of Indonesian cuisine took on a new dimension at 'Restaurant Indonesia' in Napier, nestled by the beach. Opting for the main course was an adventure in itself, with a tantalizing array of 14 different dish samples served alongside aromatic rice. For someone unfamiliar with Indonesian flavors, it was a captivating journey through a diverse and delicious palette.

The staff at 'Restaurant Indonesia' in Napier exemplified hospitality at its finest. Their warmth and friendliness enhanced the overall experience, making it not just a meal but a memorable encounter. Service was prompt, with each dish arriving fresh and bursting with authentic flavors.

To cap off the experience, I indulged in a coconut dessert that was nothing short of amazing. It was perfectly balanced, not too sweet, and exceptionally fresh. This delightful treat was a fitting conclusion to an already exceptional meal.

Against the backdrop of the beach, 'Restaurant Indonesia' offers a unique and delightful blend of exquisite cuisine and coastal ambiance. From the first bite to the last, the culinary voyage at this gem in Napier was truly unforgettable. I eagerly anticipate my next visit to explore more of the culinary treasures that 'Restaurant Indonesia'...

Impressive Indonesian décor that makes you feel that you are in another country, it was one of the best I've seen in a restaurant so far. The service was excellent and we were attended to y the staff, constantly. The Rijsttafels menu is a great idea as it gives an excellent introduction to the Indonesian cuisine by offering a various different dishes to try in one sitting, hence we ordered the Supreme which had almost everything. Coming from Malaysia where the food is rich with spices, I felt that the spices here has been dumbed down and several dishes lacked flavour. There were rendang and curry dishes that tasted good but could do with something that will give that extra ooomph. The Udang goreng was my least favourite: the shrimps were rubbery, cooked in some sort of caramel-like sauce that didn't have a whole lot of flavour. The condiments/side dishes however were delicious and complements the main dishes. All in all, we enjoyed the atmosphere and had fun trying out the various flavours in...

Have been here for over an hour now. Our order was taken about five minutes after we sat down and so far we've had drinks, a "complimentary" plate of onion crackers and some chili dips which we had to remind them to bring to us. I'm sure the food is spectacular (all the reviews say so) but this kind of wait is ridiculous.

Edit. After about an hour and a half, when I was resigned to paying for the drinks and going for pizza, the food arrived. Then the maitre d' comes and asks how the food is, my partner answers for us, saying that the food is excellent (it is) but the wait was longer than expected and she tries to justify it by saying "I did warn you" in a teacher voice (she didn't, she asked us to wait while the table was prepared, never once suggesting that we'd be waiting over an hour for our food, we'd have gone somewhere else had this been the case). I've never had quite such rubbish service, and certainly not in a place which has a reputation for being so good). Highly...

Cantik (beautiful) restaurant, people and cuisine! We sat for a meal for two. Both of us has the Rijsttafel (a banquet of four dishes, rice and little dishes for toppings) one meat and one vegan. It was amazing having so many different flavours in one sitting, especially having many vegan options. The lapis legit - spekkoek which is a very thin, fluffy chocolate layered Indodutch cake was also devine. Indonesian culture is evident through the food, the interior and exterior and the owners/operators of the restaurant. My experience at Restaurant Indonesia made my taste buds feel like I was eating with my family in Bali (my aunty is a Balinese chef). I think adding Indonesian breakfast to the menu would be make the experience even more fantastic too ;) I would love to have more Indonesian cuisine in New Zealand as the flavours are exciting and cantik (beautiful). Go here if you are eating out in Napier!

The Dutch - Indonesian Rijsttafel is a bit of an icon in the Netherlands. Imagine my surprise when I found one right in Napier! The rijsttafel can be considered a bit of a tasting menu or showcase of what is on offer in the restaurant, and The Barong certainly has a lot on offer! As we were four, we ordered the four different types of rijsttafel available, which got us a beautiful spread of dishes with flavours from all over the Indonesian archipelago. The layering and complexity of flavours was absolutely amazing - something you'd be very hard pressed to find in the Netherlands. Leave some space for the home made spekkoek, see picture :) A special mention to the lovely, friendly and helpful proprietors of the restaurant. They were genuinely proud of their place, their heritage and their food - and rightfully so, what a gem! Thank you - Terima Kasih
