Elixir Cafe — Restaurant in North Island

We had never been to New Plymouth before but after seeing the many good reviews for this place we decided to give it a go. Yes it was very loud and busy but that didn't bother us, we were told to find a seat and they would bring us the menu. There was no suggestion that there would be a delay with food or drinks. It took 25 minutes for the coffees to arrive, which very TINY compared to all other cafes we have ever been to - however the few mouthfuls we got were very nice. We ordered the chicken waffles - it was another 30 minutes (after the coffees) before this arrived. One meal was hot but the other cold to the touch. The chicken was delicious and egg was poached well, the waffle itself was peculiar in taste and oddly very stodgy. The staff were busy but friendly which was nice. Funky little popular cafe and the food was amazing. The first time we went there, there was about a 20 min delay with the food, but they gave us a heads up about this when we ordered. I had a mango smoothie with coconut milk (vegan) and the roasted cauliflower detox bowl (vegan), which were both absolutely divine. The detox bowl was a big portion and surprising very filling. My partner had the thai peanut bowl which was also very yummy. We had to go back there a second time for lunch and that's when I tried their famous mince on toast, which was incredible. Never tasted such beautiful rich and flavoursome mince before. Staff were friendly and their cakes looked delicious (albeit $10 per slice!), but I was too full to try some. Sales and service is my job (which has taken me to some pretty good venues globally) and I have to say the team at Elixer are world class. Very welcoming and great attention to detail wrapped around an understated service delivery. Adjacent tables were cleared in an efficient and timely manner giving the appearance of a happy and well run establishment. So that's what you expect when you are hoping for a good dining experience aye. But the surprise and delight for me was the quality engagement, the eye contact and the smiles when communicating.
