Hennessy's Irish Bar — Restaurant in North Island

I really wanted to write a great review. The lady who served us was super warm and friendly, the pub was a really nice location and the food was delivered in reasonable time—but the food let it down. Yes, it's pub food (which my husband and I really like), but there's pub food done well, and pub food done not so well. Alas, for me, Hennessy's was the latter. I ordered the steak (medium rare...and it was, indeed medium rare) with salad (which was lovely and fresh) and chips with garlic butter and aioli. I ate the salad first. There may have been a tiny bit of dressing on it, but it was hard to tell. It just tasted like I was eating a naked salad (dry). Then I started on the steak, which was on its way to being cold because they brought our hot meals out on freezing cold plates (my pet peeve!). The aioli was 'meh', served in a plastic pottle, and was, I would say, not made in house. The garlic butter was also 'meh'. It was that bought-in stuff that is really airy and doesn't taste much like actual butter. Anyway, I wish them well....nice people....but I wouldn't eat there again. Came in with a big group. Specifically asked if the ice chocolate was full of ice cubes or like a frappe. He confirmed not have the ice cubes in..... turn up. Full of ice. :*. The 'special' of the day was fish and chips. $ '1990.... 'down from $26'. Except what you got was not the same I.e. te regular price has 3 pieces of fish. The special only 2. We confirmed what the special price was normally he said 1990... so therefore false advertising and under the fair trade you could be busted. To sell something at the regular price is not a special. Also the price which was pointed out to us in the book was dearer.... but not for the same thing. Sad. Obviously you get lots of tourists who go thru the restaurant. .. people who will only go there once. Other than that. Once the meals arrived. They were big and filling and tasty for my team. I chose not to buy tea fir myself because the bad taste the deception had shown me. .... even thou I personally paid for the whole group. I would go there again. Had a late lunch/early dinner on sunday. The food was terrible. I ordered the chicken pita. It was a soggy not cooked or heated pita pocket humus smeared on the top.then lettuce thrown on top and two small dry and overcooked un seasoned pieces of chicken breast on the top.no presentation no flavor no dressing no nothing.i ate little it was yuck. Friend got foccacia with satay chicken. In writing on the menu it sounded nice .yeah nah.overcooked chicken. Satay sauce just out of a bottle and very sweet. Salad boring no dressing. These meals were $21 each.Disappointing so we told the barman. He gave us our money back whilst looking like he was going to cry.
