We recently celebrated my father's 56th birthday at Malabar Restaurant, and I must say, it was a memorable experience. From the moment we walked in, the warm hospitality and lovely, helpful staff made us feel right at home. My parents, who were traveling from India, were especially impressed with the genuine care and comfort provided by the team at Malabar. We ordered chicken lollipop, chips, chicken momo, butter chicken, chilli chicken, and chicken tikka masala with rice and naan. Each dish was expertly prepared, but a few stood out in particular. The chicken lollipop was a hit, especially with my daughter. It's her favorite dish, and she frequently recommends Malabar to her friends just for the juicy, flavourful lollipops. The butter chicken exceeded our expectations—it was rich, creamy, and perfectly spiced. Definitely a must-try for anyone visiting. The chilli chicken was also a standout, perfectly balancing heat and flavor. The portion sizes were generous, enough for two people to share comfortably. The curries, paired with rice, were a delightful combination, making each bite a pleasure. A special thanks to the Malabar staff for allowing us to bring in a birthday cake and for holding up the surprise. This thoughtful gesture added a personal touch to our celebration and made the evening even more special. Overall, Malabar Restaurant provided an exceptional dining experience with its warm ambiance, attentive service, and delectable food. We look forward to returning and trying more of their delicious offerings.

There are numerous Indian restaurants in almost every corner of the country and one might think Indian food pretty much tastes always the same. Not there. Menu offers standard dishes loved by everyone plus some original, more exotic ones (Nepalese as well). We went for a classic chicken korma (sweet curry with cashew and almond) and a lamb junglee, a curry with lemongrass and coconut. Both were delicious but special mention to the second one, lamb was melting, SO flavourful and fresh, probably the best I've ever tasted. We ordered a garlic naan and a roti that perfectly matched our mains after finishing our steamed rice. Go for the Indian hot chai tea if you're into milky-spicy-warm beverages. Warm welcome, ultra friendly and helpful staff, incredibly delicious food. Do not miss that gem while in Taupo.

We recently visited Malabar and had high hopes based on the buzz. We tried the Chilly Momo, Steam Momo, Jhol Momo, and Fish Curry. Unfortunately, the food didn’t quite meet expectations. The Chilly Momo had a very thick outer layer, making it heavy and a bit doughy. The Steam Momo was overcooked, which took away from the usual softness and flavor. The Fish Curry was also disappointing and didn’t taste well-balanced. On a positive note, the customer service was outstanding — the staff was attentive, friendly, and made the experience much better. Overall, while the food was average, the excellent service made up for it slightly. I hope the kitchen can fine-tune the dishes because the potential is definitely there.

We recently ordered takeaway from Malabar Nepalese and Indian Kitchen for Matiriki Day. Unfortunately, our experience was a mixed bag. Despite the wait, the food itself was excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed the flavors and quality of the dishes we ordered. We initially attempted to order by phone, but the line was disconnected. We then went to the restaurant directly, where it was quite busy. The manager advised us of a 45-minute wait time for our order. However, after an hour, the food still wasn't ready. This wait time was particularly challenging as we had young children and elderly parents with us. Unfortunately, finding alternative options at that point was difficult. The staff member who finally provided our order seemed unconcerned about the significant delay. A simple apology or explanation would have gone a long way in improving our experience. While the food was delicious, the long wait time and lack of communication from staff significantly impacted our experience. If you're willing to potentially face a lengthy wait, you won't be disappointed with the food itself. However, for those seeking a more efficient takeaway option, you may want to consider other...

I found this place via Google reviews and it did not disappoint. The decor and ambience is lovely. The waitress was friendly and attentive. As I was the only customer at the time, the service was superb.

I ordered a medium palak paneer. It was the best version of this dish I've ever had. The spinach sauce was very finely blended - so smooth and delicate it had a creamy texture and taste. And the "medium" was spot on - exactly the right level of heat/spice, just enough to leave a pleasant warmth in the mouth. The rice was light and fluffy, and steaming hot when it arrived at the table.

The portion sizes were pretty spot on for a single person - a little more than was comfortable for me for a lunch meal, but not enough to take away leftovers so I finished the curry and had to leave some rice.

The only disappointment was the drink I ordered: passion fruit lemonade. It tasted like ordinary lemon squash softdrink with a bit of passionfruit added (but not enough to balance out the lemon flavour).

I would definitely...
