Mixed review...I had high recommendations to try their freshly shucked mussels, then being battered and deep fried. I asked several times, were the mussels fresh shucked. The server said they were fresh, so I asked again fresh shucked? They are fresh, she replied. So I ordered a dozen at $2.50 each, as well as a paua fritter $10.50 and a pineapple fritter I can't remember the price. Unfortunately the mussels were not fresh shucked, I knew as soon as I ate the first one. I think they were either steamed or boiled open, and then battered and deep fried. The texture is very different when raw, and freshly shucked. So I was very very disappointed. They were fortunately still okay to eat. The pineapple fritter, and paua fritter were both absolutely divine. They need to have a better quality malt vinegar. The one they offer is a very cheap version... not good! They also sell a good range of fresh fish, Bluff oysters, smoked fish, raw fish salad, frozen seafoods etc. Great seafood selection. Free parking area, which is a rarity in Wellington city. Also a couple of tables and chairs for indoor, and outdoor dining. A couple of drinks fridges, unfortunately they didn't have what I wanted. So I had to cross the road, to get my Sprite...
Read moreHands down these folk have to be the best at what they do in the Wellington Region - WT have been an institution in the upper Cuba precinct for years and for good reason - fish is always fresh and perfectly cooked. Whether its battered, crumbed or grilled (a slightly longer wait) their fish is the best IMHO - my favourite is crumbed Blue Cod but truly any of their fish types are tasty plus because of their freshness, quality of oil, batter and ingredients used and all are served in generous sizes. Chips are very good as well. WT have a great range of fish in their display cabinet for those wanting to purchase fresh or frozen fish whole of fillets/steaks and pretty impressive range of xtras as well - my favourite being scallops to have grilled and put in with the fish. Place is always spotless, staff are very friendly, seating area very nice and airy and it's a nice place to sit and watch passers-by whilst waiting for an order - oh and parking is great with their own off-street park on the south side for customer vehicles. Always a big thumbs up...
Read moreThis place has the best fish & Chips in Wellington. I take 2 little Grandsons, & a son of mine. If it is too crowded inside, there are picnic tables, complete with attendant sea gulls, outside. You can order your fish battered or crumbed They have a drinks fridge plus small tins of tomatoes sauce or tartar sauce. Eat in or take away. The meal is affordable & gorgeous every time, and we have been their heaps of times. They have magnificent fresh fish at good priced & they usually have pots of raw fish, which I love. A very mixed clientele. Lots of regulars. Taxi drivers, old folk, local construction workers uptown girls & boys, upmarket oldies. The owner doesn't know how to smile, that's old Peter, I think, but he hires great Staff and we all love the older lady who is always on the til. Very busy and they deliver top quality food every time. Thank you Wellington Trawling. See...
