My suggestion would be to eat somewhere else you enjoy unless you're looking for a mediocre meal that's on the expensive side.
Uyghur style baked meat pies were ok, the pastry was chewy and I'm not talking about the bottom that soaked up the juices, a crispy top would have been nice.
Polo (braised rice with lamb and carrots) was bland, rice was slightly under done and the lamb pieces were strategically placed to appear ample. It says braised lamb but some burnt/black pieces of lamb were served. It didn't taste bad overall but I certainly wouldn't order it again.
Finally the Stir-fried chilli chicken with potatoes was really under whelming, sauce was watery in consistency and flavour. Had no capsicum at all which is traditional for the dish. Whole/meatier pieces of the chicken were very dry considering it's a braise/stew. The noodles in it were tough. I highly recommend a certain place with stairs on Dominion Rd famous for their version of this dish, theirs never disappoints.
Service and Atmosphere are fine but not enough to make up for the lacking in the food.
On the whole though wasn't the worst meal but not the best. Left feeling dissatisfied...
Read moreUyghur cuisine is an absolute gem that deserves way more recognition! The flavours are incredibly rich and complex.
What makes it so special is how it sits at this incredible crossroads of culinary traditions - you get the heartiness of Central Asian cooking mixed with Chinese techniques and Middle Eastern spice profiles. I love that satisfying, comfort-food quality, eating good food with friends with these bold, warming spices that are completely their own thing.
The fact that they've expanded to the Shore is fantastic news for Auckland food lovers. Uyghur restaurants often feel like hidden treasures, and now more people can discover dishes like polo, manta (steamed dumplings), and those incredible grilled lamb skewers that I could once only get on Dominion Road.
Definitely one of those cuisines where once you try it, you'll find yourself craving those unique flavour...
