Body Fuel Cafe — Restaurant in Waikato

Okay, brace for a rant. So I understand that many restaurants are trying to figure out vegan food and I'm SO appreciative of the effort and stumbling that goes along with that. However, it's really frustrating when has food that is labeled on their menu as "vegan" and then isn't vegan.

We got some delicious breakfast at BodyFuel in Taupo (which was much needed after our 6 hour trek through Mt Doom pictures on our travel page @forgoodnessseyks ). I was giddy like a child as I picked out a couple of meals for us that were marked "vegan". I even specified and asked that the side salad would be vegan.

We got the breakfast raw energy salad and the bean, pumpkin breakfast pie.

When the "pie" came it had a sauce that has sour cream in it ‍ That's not vegan. We had to send it back. So grateful that they're trying though The woman we ordered from was kind and helpful.

I came here to order some coffee and matcha and despite asking for it to be non-sweet, it was indeed, sweet.

When we enquired about it the barista just dismissed it and made a blanket statement “it’s just sweet and that’s the same everywhere” instead of just explaining or knowing from the beginning that their matcha powder has sugar added.

I suppose it means that they don’t know or perhaps don’t want to admit that their matcha powder is low quality. Better quality matcha is just straight tea, why would it be sweet? Unless they’ve discovered a new type of tea variety that has sugar already added.

If you like your matcha to be made of better quality powder, it’s best to find somewhere else.

Edit: thanks for the reply but we specially asked for it to be non-sweet from the beginning. The initial response was dismissive so there was no indication...

We were in Taupo for a trip from Auckland.

I went inside this cafe to grab a coffee then the fresh selection of salads grabbed my attention. So I convinced the group I’m with to come back to have lunch there.

I ordered the krunchy broccoli and the orzo salads. My friends ordered the chicken salad, my husband ordered the BLT and my daughter had a cheese toastie. Everyone was impressed and happy with their meal. The flavours were on point. Even the cheese toastie had beautiful taste to it.

I highly recommend this cafe if you are in the area. They also have a good range of food that cater to different dietary requirements (vegan, gluten...
