My family and I visited Dixie Brown for the first time recently by accident on the 19th of Jan and I am glad to say it was a very good accident indeed. Before I get to the good part of our experience, unfortunately there were some negatives. As we entered in, our family was forced to enter into the restaurant again as they could not check our vaccine passes at our table. The waitress then took us around and we got to seat at the exact table we chose at the very beginning. The unfortunate part was that the family at the next table had their vaccine passes checked right at the table. There was some obvious discrimination there by the female staff. Also, its very difficult to get service at the table, and we were not given any cutlery or serviettes with our meals. Please bring the cutlery along with our meal. It also would be recommended to have some type of service device on tables as it is very challenging to get service especially during peak times. Now to the good parts and there is more than one! Our main server George was absolutely amazing, we experienced some great customer service from him. He was attentive, friendly and talkative. He is a perfect example of what excellent customer service should be and how it should be exhibited. Now to the most important part... THE FOOD!!! We initially went in thinking we would order drinks. We had the Irish coffee, Death by chocolate, lemonade and ginger ale. The Irish coffee is highly highly recommended by my Mom and Mom just wants to go back for more. All their drinks, spot on. We then had a look at the menu and decided to order some deserts. We had the cheesecake and waffles. One negative was that the dishes were too sweet, the syrup on the waffles would be better on the side rather than pre-poured on the plate. Just so the customer can choose the amount they want. The cheesecake was to die for, also very sweet but definitely worth it. At this moment we were having such a good experience we decided to look at the dinner menu. Let me tell you, we would have regretted making that decision if we had walked out after the desserts. We ordered the special that day which was the Lobster tail and rather than eye fillet we replaced it with the fish. Excellent no complains there, highly enjoyable and worth it. We also had the BBQ chicken pizza, it was smokey, it was cheesy, it was crispy. Again very highly recommended. This place is definitely recommended for anyone who visits Taupo even if its for drinks.

I have been plenty of times in the past and was happy with service and the food. The last time I came I was a little disappointed by service but brushed it off. This time though (18th Dec).... Waited for ages to be seated and so did 2 other customers that arrived the same time as us. The resturant was not busy at all, pretty much empty inside when we got there but all the staff that we had interactions with seemed like they had just come out of a staff meeting where they had a telling off...none were friendly or had any smiles on their faces. We went as a special treat because a Facebook ad had caught my attention of a new milkshake so drove to them specifically. So a great disappointment with customer service. The milkshake looked great and matched the ad's picture, but we wouldn't order again for taste and price. Didn't come with a straw. When I went to the counter to ask for one the manager at the till didn't speak or look at me for more than 5 mins until my waiter came. He then printed a bill and told the waiter to deal with it. The waiter said that's $15 and I said I had come for a straw not a bill as we had not finished yet. Very embracing and rude. They could not cater for a simple omelet as they make them only in the morning, not afternoon. We won't be back.

We usually don't visit same place more than once when we travel as like to try different things. But we loved this restaurant so much we came back on the second night. Not only the food was A+++ but the staff is incredibly professional and make the whole experience even nicer. Other than the menu items, the dessert cabinet is incredible and i would say even if you are full from your dinner- get one of those desserts take away anyway- it's worth it . Update: sadly this time around I found out that they no longer make Hazelnut praline, which was my favourite dessert with them and I'm super sad ! I hope they bring it back! The rest of the meal was fantastic as always. Chicken and bacon fettuccine - just the right size of portion, amazing balanced dish with a hint of roasted capsicum - yummy! And partner had big breakfast, which was truly big- he is a big eater and was very satisfied with quantity and quality! See you next time again !

If I could give 4 and a half stars, I would. It was literally only because we had to ask about drink orders twice. The table next to us also had to ask. It was also slow ish service, not necessarily bad because it let drinks and food go down but it did get to a point where we started looking around for service. Besides that, the staff are lovely, there's a great atmosphere and the food was perfect! I'll definitely be going back. The prices are a little high, but the portions are decent and the quality makes it worth it. The cocktails I would say are the only items not worth their dollar, but they're not terrible, just more expensive than most. Highly recommend you book a table, even on a Monday night it was full and they had to turn away 3 or 4 groups just while we were there. Last but not least, the garlic and onion mashed potato is the best mashed potato I've ever had, definitely recommend any dish that comes with that.

Landed here on a busy Saturday night after being turned away from other restaurants for not having reservations. Dixie was full up as well, but the awesome host was able to fit us in between two reservations for a quicker meal (thank you so, so much!) The ribs were fantastic, best we've had in NZ and rivaling texas baby back. The butter chicken was the best curry dish I've had in years and reminded me of my time in India. Incredibly well prepared and wonderful rice and yogurt. The spaghetti with meatballs was a bit of a letdown. Meatballs were overcooked, too hard and too dry. Calimari seemed to be the frozen variety, but was well prepared, sauce was delicious, and the greens included were great. Finishing with a double thick chocolate shake was tough, their dessert menu is one of the best I've seen. Would return here several times just to experience the rest of the menu.

Went to Dixie Browns twice over the last year. First time we were stopping through from Wellington and just looking for a family meal. We stopped for pizza and some mains. The desserts looked good but we had to keep going. I kept the place in mind for a trip back with the kids again. The next visit things were much busier and it was difficult to get a table, a bit of a wait on food but otherwise good the only thing was we thought we saw a donut in the dessert cabinet, ordered a donut and it turned out to be a cheesecake. They were very busy though and mistakes can happen (they don’t do donuts at all). All good. The strawberry shake definitely was a hit. I enjoyed the pork belly and the tequila chicken. The peanut butter brûlée was great and the cheesecake was actually great though the person who ordered the donut doesn’t like cheesecake 😅🤣
