This experience was a very enjoyable one overall; despite our party visiting on a public holiday and the end of a long holiday. From arrival, the club staff treat you with excellent hospitality and ensured we weren't left alone until we were completely familiar with all club procedures and customs. One gentleman in particular (name may or may not have been Alan or Graham), was especially welcoming and gave us a tour of the club so that we knew exactly how to place orders and enjoy our time at the club.
This is particularly important as the club can be hard to navigate and is a highly stimulating environment which left at least one in our party a bit overwhelmed. Guidance was therefore well appreciated.
Decor and atmosphere in the space was enjoyable and reminiscent of the regional NZ of old. Club was also well patronised.
Outdoor area in the club is nice with a good view of the estuary and Whangamata sandbar. There is good space out here for dogs on leash although an excitable pooch next to us was obviously feeling a bit under the weather and vomited.
The food is ok but you won't be tricked into thinking you're at the Café de Paris. The fish is avoidable but the calamari is actually quite nice (maybe just share one though). I have also been asked to share that the salt comes in powder form.
Overall, worth a visit for the atmosphere and culture but I'm sure there are nicer meals in this...
Read moreThe service is terrible. The club is unfriendly and unwelcoming to outsiders. One staff member in particular: "Shirley" is physically aggressive and harasses new customers. Don't recommend this place at all! Don't visit, don't join, don't support. I asked management to address it and was immediately dismissed in that the manager asked if I was a member and since I was just a visitor he had "too many other members to attend to despite having a problem staff member, also too busy with his wife"... when I called and spoke to a staff member they were aware of Shirley being aggressive to visitors. Please don't...
Read moreWe had such a warm experience here last year. We are not members but were made felt welcome by a nice gentleman back then. Looking forward to more of the same, we drove down from Auckland for a quiet drink with a view. We understand members will be given priority but the lady at the bar with the glasses insisted on making an awkward scene in front of everyone about us not being members. The menu Prosecco we wanted was out of stock and we were given a cheap one at $17 for the glass plus another $5 membership fee per person. Served in a Woolworths glass, it came to $23 for a bottom shelf drink and a...
