I have been going to coffee pen for a number of years and love the food and coffee. Unfortunately I witnessed an incident at the cafe which means I will never be returning again. I arrived to the cafe and walked passed a group of people sitting outside sharing some cakes amoung the group. While I was waiting in line to order, one of the people from the group came inside to fill up their drink bottle at the water station. The person on the counter stopped them from doing this saying that since they had not ordered food they could not just come inside and take the water. The person on the counter insisted that the customer pay for the water (which to me looked like tap water). They tried to explain that they were part of a group that had ordered food but this was dismissed. They were charged $30 for this and were clearly shaken by the confrontation. I was tempted to leave but instead stayed to order a coffee to take away. I was not able to enjoy the taste of the coffee unfortunately. As a side note, if I were a cafe owner, I would do everything I can to discourage people from using single use plastic items so I think it's great that people can fill their water bottles and I would want to make this widely available. I'm surprised at the rudeness and lack of...
Read moreGiven all the great reviews, I was excited to try this place but was disappointed in the service.
I stood reading the menu and was about to order when a regular comes up to the counter. The barista ignores me, asks if the regular is ready to order then proceeds to take his order first, not checking if I'm ready even though I was first in line.
I ordered to eat in but asked for coffee in takeaway cups and received a curt "no since you're eating here". I explained nicely that we were keen to eat quickly as we had to be somewhere else soon after and the barista stares at me for a solid 5 to 10 seconds and just shrugs and says no to the takeaway cups. No smile, no hint of trying to explain, just a rude experience.
I get that service staff aren't paid for emotional labour but seeing how friendly he was to the person before me, I'm not entirely sure why the change in attitude and I didn't see any reason for not showing a hint of kindness in comparison to the other patrons.
Food was decent, we ordered 2 sandwiches which were yum and a matcha cheesecake that was a bit on the sweet side with not much...
Read moreNormal coffee, was a somewhat regular but I won't be going back. Staff rudely told me and my partner to leave - after we both bought coffees - because we bought a pie in a bag with us to the table. We were walking along - already bought the pie - and decided in spur of the moment to pop in to get coffee and sit. So I guess in future, throw anything you just bought away before stepping into this place or eat it very fast. Alternatively you could go to any other coffee shop where people are reasonable and are happy to take customers of the street who dont meal plan their cafe visits.
Edit in response - You didn't ask us to stop, you told not one but both of us to leave. We both ordered coffee, only my partner paid. We were never going to order food from you as we only stopped in by chance. So either A. accept sometimes people will already have things on them when they decide to purchase more from you or B. Don't and send away paying customers to satisfy your pride. I have paid for at least 10 coffees in the past as I work down the road. I won't be again - I was paying customer. Neither will...
