Newton Lodge Auckland — Hotel in Waitematā

I stayed at Newton Lodge for 10 days and had an excellent experience. The bathrooms were spotless, with hot water available 24/7, so you could hop in for a shower anytime.

The kitchen was very well-maintained by fellow mates and equipped with everything you need oven, kettle, baking trays, chopsticks, plenty of plates and utensils, four large fridges, and shelves for groceries. It’s easy for about five people to cook at the same time. During peak times, you may have to wait 20–30 minutes, which is totally reasonable given the price and nature of the place. Just observe the kitchen flow and schedule your cooking accordingly, and don’t forget to clean up after yourself so everyone can enjoy the same great experience.

I saw some negative reviews online, but I personally didn’t experience any issues during my stay. The hostel feels safe, and nobody touches each other’s food. My original booking was for 5 days, but the receptionist kindly extended my stay upon availability, which I really appreciated. They also offer affordable long-term options, perfect for work visa or working holiday visitors planning to stay over 30 days.

The common areas are bright and welcoming, with extras like reusable bags, free tea bags, laundry powder, books, and games. They even provide a free SIM card, which can be topped up easily in-store. If you’re social, it’s easy to hang out with other guests, and the CBD is just a 10-minute walk away.

One of the worst hostels of my life. I ended up in a room with no windows. The bedroom door also opened without a key. The kitchen and common areas were small and always dirty. Cleaning was done randomly and not every day. When I was there, a lady who slept in the hostel was cleaning and for 2 days. Then she was never seen again and no one cleaned up again. The staff was really rude. The guy at the front desk kept chastising me for everything: cleaning a pan I had temporarily put down, a box without labels or name that I used to package some fresh fruit. Incredible! When several guests of the hostel were really dirty people and disrespectful of the common areas: those who left crumbs, traces of oil and frying, walking barefoot in the kitchen, eating and making a mess on the sofa... and the list goes on and on. Great experience overall. This hostel is by far the best in Auckland CBD based on making meaningful connections with fellow travellers, reasonable pricing for accommodation, cleanliness in toilet and kitchen area. The rules in the hostel are taken very seriously here (example: no alcohol in the premise) to ensure that all guests feel safe and undisturbed during their stay here. There aren't any windows in a 8 bedroom dorms. But they do have a window for 6 bedroom dorms. Awa, the manager at Newton Lodge is extremely helpful and knowledgeable.
