I've lived in Wellington for 28 years, first pie i ever had was an apple pie when i was still in school. Thinking back now, i thought my pie virginity had been taken. If you have ever thought this and never been to Jo's, then you are sadly mistaken. I walked in like i had not eaten all day and the lady asked me "have you not had lunch", i told her i havent but really i was just trying to satisfy my pie cravings since my disappointing pie this morning. Flakey, buttery pastry all the way around with none of that nasty uncooked thick pastry, this doesnt exist with Jo's pastry. The texture of the pie gravy wasnt too runny and wasn't thick, there was pure meat in there, none of that carrot, corn, beans etc... like the pie i had in the morning, this was just mince with gravy and just perfect amount of lava running cheese, what i imagined as the perfect pie, Jo hit all the tick boxes. I ate half of my mince and cheese while walking back in to buy their last steak pie, equally as heavenly as the first. Only disappointment i experienced there was when i had my steak pie outside.....the wind blew away the buttery crumbs on the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI had high hopes for this place as a friend guided me there, as he loved the pies there when he was in town. So we brought a couple of pies and coffees also slices. Being a pie shop I'll tell you about them first. The pastry on the pie was very nice, crisp, flakey and a nice color. Unfortunately the filling didn't hit the spot as much as the pastry, too much gravy and not enough meat. It's so important you get the meat to gravy ratio right, especially if you are a pie shop. It tasted nice, not fantastic, but nice, but it's hard to really enjoy a sloppy pie. The slices and cheesecake were great though and deserved a 4 star or maybe more. The coffee was also good, and the service was ok too. Please bear in mind I'm spoilt when it comes to pies as Fix Federation in the Hutt is our normal go too and they make...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI've tried to give Jo's the benefit of the doubt since being picked up by new ownership, having been a local and regular for years. Unfortunately have been let down with a progressive decline in quality and quantity - don't think I'll be returning.
Fillings are lacking and in short supply. I feel the size of items have reduced - their sandwich rolls have gotten smaller and have also had many a flat pie recently. Much less flavour than they used to. Definitely not worth the $8-9 anymore.
Topping it off with disinterested AirPod wearing staff I just can't recommend anyone go out of their way for the trip these days. The new owners were left such a great blueprint, and it's truly a pity to see this Brooklyn institution become...
